Pincher Creek's 21st annual Pro Rodeo began on Thursday evening August 14 with a Team Roping Jackpot event, continued Friday morning with a Gymkhana featuring young local talent, and continued Friday evening through Sunday afternoon with a relentless lineup of events and competitions.

Championship Sunday

High octane country band Sweet Tequila shook the Horseshoe Pavilion rafters until the wee hours on Friday and Saturday nights, with the resultant hangovers being felt as far away as Juan Teran Park by Sunday.  Friday turned out to be a wet experience after the clouds opened up and lightning threatened, but for the most part the weather was sunny and warm.

Calf Scramble

Mutton busting and calf scramble events allowed many kids the chance to cowboy and cowgirl up, and some even went home with a new bike, courtesy of Windyview Mechanical Ltd.

Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society hosted the event, in conjunction with the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA).   The Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo is a CPRA sanctioned event.

Local 4-H members ran the concession stands, which did a brisk business throughout.  Volunteers make this event happen, and they were everywhere, a constant buzz of essential work going on all the time.  Pincher Creek Emergency Services was on scene to deal with the inevitable injuries that accompany rodeo events, and their presence was required several times.  Newly crowned Miss Rodeo Taber Kailey Andrus helped Miss Rodeo Pincher Chelsea Stokke and our local Flag Girls during Grand Entries, calf herding, and other duties.

Young Gunz
Young Gunz

The Young Gunz trick riding team endeared themselves to the Friday evening crowd after bravely performing despite the downpour that began in earnest as their act began.  They also performed on Saturday and Sunday under more favourable conditions.  9 year old Cora Crouteau, (Sundre), 11 year old Avery Aleman (Strathmore), and 12 year old Cooper Resch (Stettler) performed a number of fancy tricks, including Roman riding, hippodrome, suicide drag, and many others for delighted onlookers.  Avery and Cora have both received instruction from Twin Butte's Niki Flundra, and Avery also trained with Jerry Duce.

Pro Rodeo

CPRA announcers David Poulsen and Brett Gardiner maintained an entertaining and informative patter throughout the rodeo and related events.  Dramatically, many of the first place victories were earned at the wire on Sunday afternoon, including the highlight for local fans, Dustin Flundra's first Saddle Bronc win at his hometown  rodeo.
