Red Deer RCMP are searching for a man who assaulted a woman and attempted unsuccessfully to rob her at approximately 8:00 am on August 6. The incident took place in an alley driveway behind a residence in the Deer Park neighbourhood. The suspect approached the victim on foot and demanded valuables from her vehicle. The suspect pulled a knife on the victim, who fought to get away. The suspect left the area without any of the victim’s property, and the woman only suffered minor scratches.

Motorcyclist fatality in Calgary
The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section continues to investigate a fatal collision that occurred this morning at the intersection of 11 Street and Portland Street SE.
On Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at approximately 8 a.m., a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle, operated by a 21-year-old man, was northbound on 11 Street S.E., approaching Portland Street. A 2007 International five-ton truck, operated by a 42-year-old man, was southbound on 11 Street SE approaching Portland Street. The truck turned left in front of the approaching motorcycle in order to head eastbound on Portland Street. The operator of the Yamaha braked quickly, but struck the right side of the truck and was knocked off his motorcycle.
The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased at the scene. Neither of the occupants in the truck were injured.
Speed appears to have been a factor in the collision.
Bank robbery in Calgary
The Calgary Police Service is seeking public assistance in relation to a bank robbery that occurred on Thursday morning.
On Thursday, August 7, 2014, at approximately 9:45 am an unknown man entered the First Calgary Financial in the 2600 block of 52 Street N.E. The man approached a teller with a note and verbally demanded money. He was then given an undisclosed amount of money before leaving the bank. No one was injured during the robbery.
The man is described as 20 to 25 years old, 5’8” to 5’10” tall, 140 to 160 lbs., with a slim build, short dark hair, lightly tanned skin and a day’s growth of facial hair. He was wearing black sunglasses, a white hoodie, dark-coloured baseball cap and dark-coloured sweatpants.
Fatal Spruce Grove MVC
At approximately 5:15 pm on August 8 a 67 year old man from Edmonton was travelling east-bound on Highway 16, west of Highway 44. The man crossed the centre median and entered oncoming traffic and was struck by two other vehicles.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and two other drivers were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
RCMP and an RCMP Collision Analyst attended and are investigating. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected. The Highway was closed down for several hours but has since been re-opened.
The RCMP will not be releasing the identity of any of the involved persons.
Playground zone policing in Red Deer results in numerous tickets
This week, Red Deer RCMP spent several hours policing a playground zone for speeders. Police set up LASER radar three days in a row at a playground zone located on 47 Avenue between 46 Street and 48 Street. Within about an hour on Monday, RCMP issued approximately 20 tickets to speeders. On Tuesday and Wednesday, checks of the same playground zone resulted in 25 more speeders being issued tickets; RCMP also issued ten warnings to drivers for other violations. The posted speed limit for playground and school zones in Red Deer is 30 km/ hr.
RCMP want to take this opportunity to remind drivers that speed limits save lives every day, especially in playground and school zones. The faster a person is driving, the longer it takes them to stop, and the greater the impact.
Playground zones, school zones and construction zones all mean speed fines double. Drivers going 50 km/ hr in a playground or school zone face a fine of $289 for driving 20 km/ hr over the posted speed limit.
Playground zones are in effect every day of the week from 8:30 am until one hour after sunset. RCMP would like to remind drivers that it’s important to always be on the lookout for signage while driving, as well as for children, animals and unexpected moves by other drivers, pedestrians or cyclists.
High visibility traffic enforcement on Hwy 63
On August 7th and 8th, Boyle RCMP and the Boyle Integrated Traffic Unit conducted a High Visibility Enforcement Operation on Highway 63. During the course of the two day operation speed enforcement was conducted using aircraft and unmarked police vehicles. In addition to the speed enforcement, Check Stops were held in various locations along Highway 63.
This operation netted a total of 218 Provincial charges. Offences included speeding, driving while unauthorized, operating uninsured motor vehicles and equipment violations. Additionally, two suspended drivers were removed from the roadway and charged under the Criminal Code. One male received a 72 hour suspension for consuming alcohol while driving.
The use of aircraft in speed operations on Highway 63 has increased over the past year. Given the success of this operation it is anticipated that this technique will be utilized more frequently in the future. Alberta Sheriff Sergeant Mark Handley states, "It is our intention to increase the use of aircraft patrol on Highway 63 over the coming months. This is a safe and affective means of enforcing speed on this busy highway".
Highway 63 has been known for it's serious collisions and high volume of traffic. In an effort to combat these occurrences, RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs have increased their presence along the highway. As a result, collisions have dropped dramatically over the last year in the Boyle Detachment area (Highway 63 at Boyle to Highway 63 at Mariana Lake). During the first seven months of 2013, 321 collisions were reported compared to 203 in 2014.
"While weather plays a role in many collisions, other's are often preventable. Speeding, impaired driving and distracted driving have been determined as the cause of a number of collisions in recent months. These operations aim to bring these collision numbers down." says Sergeant Kevin McGillivray of the Boyle RCMP.
Tools stolen from school in Fort Vermilion
Fort Vermilion RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in solving a crime in which suspect(s) broke into a trailer that was at the Rocky Lane school on the night of August 5th, 2014. Several construction materials were taken from the trailer including a socket set, bit set for a drill, nailer, impact kit, sander, drill, and a saw and sander. The trailer was left at the school as a construction project is underway there. The matter is still under investigation.

Macs store robbed in Airdrie
In the early hours of August 8, 2014, Airdrie RCMP was dispatched to a complaint of Robbery at the Macs Convenience Store on Summerfield Blvd.

At approximately 5:30am, a man entered the Macs Store, approached the store clerk, pushed him, then grabbed the cash register and ran out of the store into a waiting vehicle. The store clerk immediately sounded the store’s hold-up alarm and police were dispatched. The clerk sustained no injuries.
Airdrie RCMP City Watch Members and Airdrie RCMP General Investigative Section attended the scene, interviewed witnesses and obtained video surveillance. A short time later RCMP received a call that the register had been located near Highway 2 and Highway 566 in Balzac.

The Calgary Police Service is seeking public assistance in relation to a bank robbery that occurred on Thursday morning.

Investigators in the Sexual Assault Section with the Edmonton Police Service have charged a male in connection with three alleged sexual assaults that are believed to have occurred between April to July 2014. Investigators believe there may be other unreported incidents.
Initial interactions between the male suspect and the three complainants began in areas accessible to the public in downtown Edmonton between the hours of 5 pm and 12 am. All three complainants were of Asian descent and smaller in stature. The Sexual Assault detectives believe the male suspect’s main target group is people of a smaller stature.
Once the complainants were in a more isolated area, the male suspect attempted to overpower each complainant and allegedly sexually assaulted them. All three complainants had observed and took note of the male suspect lingering in a public space prior to the assaults.
The male suspect appears to be in his late teens to early 20s, is approximately 6 ft. tall with a thin build. He remains in custody.

Airdrie hail generates storm of calls
Severe hail storms hit Airdrie between the hours of 4:00 pm and 600: pm. During that time, Airdrie RCMP responded to 24 calls for services ranging from alarms to motor vehicle collisions.
One collision on Yankee Valley involved 5 vehicles, and required Airdrie Fire Services to extricate a vehicle occupant. There were no injuries.
Airdrie RCMP would like to advise the public that it does not provide damage stickers for hail damage.
