Multiple arrests for multiple charges in Lethbridge

Lethbridge Regional Police Service

Lethbridge Regional Police have charged three men in connection with several recent crimes.

On August 16 at approximately 5 am a group of males were at a house party along the 600 block of 12 Street South. The group was involved in an altercation outside the home and one of the men deployed a can of bear spray and brandished and axe. A second male was also in possession of a firearm. The males attempted to gain entry to the home but were locked out by the occupants. Multiple windows were smashed and the males fled in a red car.

On August 17 at approximately 12:57 a.m. police observed a vehicle matching the description of the red suspect vehicle along the 200 block of 13 Street North. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle did not pull over.

At 6:35 pm police responded to a report that a male and female entered the Westminster Liquor store and while the clerk was distracted, the male stole a bottle of liquor and fled on foot. The female got into a waiting red car and the male was picked up a short distance away.

The suspect vehicle was located later in the evening parked at a residence along the 2500 block of 13 Street North. Further investigation determined that four subjects – three males and a female – were inside the home and around 8 p.m. police cordoned off the area. The cordon was a precautionary measure in the interest of public safety as the subjects were believed to be in possession of a firearm. Approximately three hours later all four subjects surrendered to police and were arrested without incident. Police also seized a firearm and recovered the red car which had been taken without the owner’s consent.

Cargill fined for tampered wastewater samples

Government of Alberta

A Provincial Court judge has fined Cargill Limited $80,000 for failing to immediately report intentionally-diluted wastewater samples.

The offenses occurred in the company’s High River facility between February and March 2012.

An agreed statement of facts indicates that a former employee admitted to tampering with three composite treatment wastewater samples containing phosphorus before they were sent to an external lab for analysis.

In April 2012, Cargill notified Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development of potential errors with its March 2012 wastewater report.

There is no evidence that any environmental harm occurred as a result of wastewater that contained levels of phosphorus above the approved level.

St. Albert business break-ins

St. Albert RCMP

Overnight between Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th, St. Albert was hit by 3 business break and enters. Sometime between closing on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, 2014, someone broke into the Tangled Hair Salon located on McKenney Avenue in St. Albert. The suspect(s) smashed the front door glass and took a small amount of money from the cash register. The money would have been in $5 dollar bills, toonies, loonies and quarters.

At approximately 20 minutes after midnight on Sunday, August 17th, someone smashed the front door glass at Rick's Auto Service on Renault Crescent in St. Albert, causing the alarm to be activated. The suspect(s) rifled through desk drawers but nothing appears to have been stolen from this business.

Next door at Pinnacle Auto Detail, on the same night, someone also smashed the front door glass of this business and stole an small amount of cash that would have been in small bills and change. As well, an iPhone was stolen from one of the desks.

Egging and doorbell ringing continues in St. Albert

St. Albert RCMP

Multiple reports of egging and doorbell ringing have been received by St. Albert RCMP during the nights of August 17th, 18th and 19th throughout the city and it is possible that a truck and 2 silver cars are involved.

On August 17, 2014, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a 69 year old male resident in the Deer ridge area of St. Albert was rousted out of bed when his doorbell was rung. He did not find anyone at his door when he answered it.

On that same night, 8 vehicles were egged in the Pineview area of St. Albert. It would appear that someone drove up the street throwing eggs at all the parked vehicles in the area.

Between Monday August 18th and Tuesday morning, August 19th, someone egged a vehicle in the Oakmont area of St. Albert that belonged to a 20 year old woman.

That same evening, someone attended a residence in the Lacombe area of St. Albert and threw eggs "all over their residence". This family stated that they have had their doorbell rung at all hours of the day and night for the last 2 weeks as well.

At one of these incidents, a truck and 2 silver cars were seen speeding away from the scene.

Attempted B&E in St. Albert

St. Albert RCMP

An alert St. Albert woman may have averted a Break and Enter to her home. On August 6, 2014, at about 8:30 p.m., a 45 year old female resident of the Grandin area of St. Albert, Alberta, noticed that there was a suspicious pickup truck parked in front of her home for about 30 minutes. Upon checking her residence, the homeowner noticed that someone had tried to gain access to her garage by damaging a screen covering the garage window. It did not look like the culprit had been successful in trying to get into the garage, but the homeowner called the RCMP to be sure.

The RCMP were able to locate the vehicle and the suspicious female that admitted to driving it. Although there was not evidence to support any charges in relation to the attempted break and enter to the Grandin area home, the RCMP found that there were warrants for the female suspect's arrest in Edmonton and therefore she was arrested and remanded into custody.

"Prompt action by the St. Albert homeowner is probably responsible for preventing this suspect from breaking into other homes in St. Albert." says Corporal Kading of the St. Albert RCMP. "Many St. Albert residents are actively involved in preventing crimes in their neighbourhoods and that is part of why St. Albert is such a safe city."

Potential online fraud averted

St. Albert RCMP

A 44 year old St. Albert man came perilously close to losing several thousands of dollars to an on-line fraud recently. On August 14, 2014, the St. Albert man reported to the RCMP that he had made a deal to buy a Rolex watch on-line after several e-mails had been sent back and forth between him and the seller while they negotiated a price. The St. Albert man then sent the money for the deal through Pay Pal, but when the watch did not arrive, he contacted Pay Pal and froze the account. Luckily for him, he took that precaution. When the package finally arrived, it contained crumpled paper and no watch at all.

At this point, neither the buyer nor the seller have possession of the money. Pay Pal is now waiting to sort out who should receive the money and are relying on the RCMP to investigate this probable fraud.

St. Albert RCMP caution anyone making purchases from unknown people through the internet. Using Pay Pal and other reputable money processing companies adds a level of security to a transaction, but does not guarantee that the seller is legit. "Buyer Beware." says Cpl. Laurel Kading of the St. Albert RCMP. "Try to do your homework whenever you are selling or buying merchandise privately, but understand there is a level of risk to these kinds of agreements."

This investigation is continuing, and no charges have been laid.

Red Deer RCMP
Dance from "Free the Fuzz 2013
Parkland Mall shoppers will be entertained to see a couple of police officers suspended on scaffolding in front of Walmart the weekend of August 22 through 24. It’s “Free the Fuzz” weekend, and these courageous cops have committed to staying on the scaffolding until they meet their goal of raising $25,000 for the Special Olympics. Their efforts will be supported on the ground with music, dancing and encouragement from Special Olympians and onlookers, and a barbeque by donation. All donations go straight to the Special Olympics.

“A volunteer from RCMP and one from Alberta Sheriffs will stay up on the scaffolding the entire weekend, from 9 am Friday through to 4 pm on Sunday – they will only come down earlier if we meet our goal of $25,000,” says Constable Jeff Hewitt with Red Deer RCMP. “The Special Olympics is an important community organization that showcases some great athletes, so mark your calendars and make sure to come by, enjoy the show and throw your money in the bucket for this excellent cause.”

The Free the Fuzz ground party encouraging the officers will take place from 9 am to 7 pm Friday and Saturday, and from 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday. Last year, police reached their target of $25,000 in donations at 4 pm on the Sunday; this year, they hope to reach that goal even earlier and free the fuzz from their perches ahead of schedule.
