The Calgary Police Service is investigating an early morning fatal hit-and-run.
At approximately 2:30 am this morning, Monday, July 7, 2014, a vehicle was traveling westbound on 16 Avenue, exiting onto the Barlow Trail South off ramp, when it struck a pedestrian before swerving onto the grass median to the left of the off ramp. It then returned onto westbound 16 Avenue, driving away from the scene.
The pedestrian, a 20-year-old male received a fatal head injury and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
At 7:50 a.m. police located a Hyundai Santa Fe in the 2400 block of Vermilion Street N.E., and are determining if it is connected to the collision.

Missing person Suryan Giama found deceased at Stoney Nakoda First Nation
Police have recovered the body of a man reported missing by his family in February.
At approximately 1 p.m., on Monday, June 30, 2014, Cochrane RCMP received a phone call from a citizen who located what appeared to be human remains on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation near Morley. The RCMP notified the Calgary Police Service and the remains were collected and transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Following an autopsy, the remains were identified as 25-year-old Suryan GIAMA. The cause of death remains undetermined at this time and the police investigation is continuing. Next of kin has been notified.
GIAMA was last seen by a family member on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at a residence in Woodbine. His dark grey, 2007 four-door Toyota Camry was recovered in southwest Calgary on Wednesday, March 19, 2014. A thorough investigation, which included several searches in and around Calgary, led detectives to believe he was deceased. Officers continue to trace his final movements prior to his disappearance and death.

Teenage girl killed in ATV rollover near Frog Lake First Nation
On July 6th at approximately 5:50 pm Elk Point RCMP and emergency services from Elk Point and area responded to serious injury collision involving a single All Terrain Vehicle on Range Road 41 and Twp 570 near Frog Lake First Nation.
The investigation found that a 14 year old female had been driving south on range road 41 alone. The ATV entered the west ditch and collided with a fence post ejecting the female operator. The ATV then continued a short distance on its own. The female was located by family members unconscious, and unresponsive lying in the ditch. She was noted to have several internal and external injuries. She was not wearing a helmet.
STARS Air Ambulance responded to the scene and air lifted the female to the University of Alberta Hospital. The female unfortunately succumb to her injuries while at hospital.
While the file remains open, no charges are expected regarding this unfortunate incident. The name of the deceased will not be released at this time.
At 6:25 this morning July 7 Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP were called to a motor vehicle collision on Secondary Highway 770, approximately 200 metres south of Range Road 512.
Preliminary investigation suggests two vehicles were involved in a head on collision. The driver of one vehicle succumbed to his injuries on scene. The driver of the second vehicle was pulled from his vehicle by off duty firefighters from the Stony Plain Fire Department. The injured man was transported to hospital in Edmonton via Stars Air Ambulance. The extent of his injuries is not known at this time.
There were no passengers in either of the vehicles.
The collision remains under investigation and the cause has not yet been identified.
Pedestrian killed and police car struck in two separate incidents near Canmore
On July 5th, 2014, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Canmore RCMP were approached by the driver of a tractor trailer unit who stated that he believed that he had struck a pedestrian on the Trans Canada Highway near Canmore. The driver was unable to identify the exact location of the incident. The RCMP and partner agencies conducted a search of the highway, and a deceased male was located near Canmore on the Trans Canada Highway. It appeared that the pedestrian was walking in the eastbound driving lane of the highway when he was struck. The deceased was identified as a 30 year old male from Calgary.
During the investigation, police were stopped in the right, East-bound lane of the Trans Canada Highway near Lac Des Arcs when an East-bound vehicle struck one of the police cars. The police car had its emergency lights activated at the time, and the lane had been closed. In the course of investigating the collision, police suspected that the driver of the vehicle was impaired. 37 year old Josh Edward Johnson of Calgary was arrested and charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Driving Over 80 mg%, and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle. No one was injured in the collision.
Thorsby/Breton fatal MVC

Highway 1 collision sends three to hospital
Three people have been taken to hospital as a result of a collision which occurred on Highway 1 just west of Highway 22.
Cochrane RCMP say that at approximately 10:40 am July 6 they received a call advising of the collision involving two west bound vehicles on Highway 1. A motor home had veered out of the driving lane toward the shoulder of the road. The driver reportedly over corrected the return to the lane, and struck a west bound SUV.
Two occupants from the motor home and the passenger from the SUV were all taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.
Weather nor road conditions appear to be factors in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
Boyle area collision with moose results in critical injuries
A woman is in critical condition as a result of a serious motor vehicle collision with a moose on Highway 63 this morning, July 7. Emergency services responded to find the woman in serious condition before transporting her to an area hospital via air.
On July 7, 2014 at around midnight a northbound sedan struck a moose on the roadway at km 118 on Highway 63 near Mariana Lakes. RCMP from Boyle, Lac La Biche and Wood Buffalo along with Pheonix Air and Helicopter, Wood Buffalo Emergency Services, Highway 63 Rescue and Lac La Biche County Fire responded to the collision.
The northbound sedan is believed to have struck the moose on the inside lane of a passing section and then veered off road in to the right hand ditch before coming to a rest. The sedan sustained serious damage and passers-by performed first aid on the lone occupant until emergency services arrived. The female has since been transported to an Edmonton area hospital in critical condition.
A second vehicle ran over the moose but none of the occupants sustained injury. Highway 63 was impassable for approximately 2 hours while emergency crews worked to extricate the female and investigate.
The investigation in to the collision is continuing at this time. Police have taken measurements and collected evidence on scene including speaking to witnesses. Alcohol and road conditions are not believed to be a factor; however, drugs and speed have not been ruled out at this time.
Body found on the Bow River
Late afternoon on the 5th of July, fishermen on the Bow River found the body of a young man.
With the assistance of the Foothill Fire Department, and High River Fire Department and their Fan Boat, police were able to retrieve the male. He has been turned over to the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death and to positively identify him. An autopsy will likely be performed on Monday.
Okotoks RCMP has been searching for 19 year old Justin McNEIL since the 22nd of June. We are unable to confirm at this time whether or not this is Justin, however we have been in touch with his family to advice them. The family is asking for privacy at this time.

RCMP Red Deer City investigates stabbing
On July 5, 2014 RCMP at approximately 1:55 a.m. Red Deer RCMP received a complaint of a male who had been stabbed on the CN walking bridge in Red Deer. Initial investigation indicates that 2 males, one being the 21 year old victim, were walking on the walking bridge and encountered a group of three other males. A fight between the 2 groups ensued where the victim was stabbed once in the abdomen. The victim was taken to a near by residence and RCMP were called.
The victim was transported to Red Deer Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Red Deer RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the 3 male suspects. They are described as:
Suspect 1:
- Approximately 5’11 tall
- Aboriginal
- 19-21 years old
- Wearing a blue jacket and black pants
- Carrying a 4-5 inch knife.
Suspect 2:
- Approximately 5’10
- Aboriginal
- 19-21 years old
- Heavy set
- Wearing a red hat and red shirt with lined designs, black track pants
- Little to no hair
- Carrying a knife
- Approximately 5’11
- 19-21 years old
- Aboriginal
- Wearing a red hat and red t-shirt, black track pants.
One of the males may go by the first name “Darian”.
There were two unknown females with the three suspects, however, we do not have any descriptions available at this time.

Wood Buffalo RCMP officer injured while investigating weapon complaint
On Saturday, July 5 2014 at approximately 12:45 p.m. Wood Buffalo RCMP officers responded to a 911 complaint with weapon at an apartment complex on Loutit Road in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
While on scene, an incident occurred which caused one of the responding officer to discharge their firearm striking a second officer. The wounded officer was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 22 year old male subject of the complaint, Alex LUMSDEN, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with Uttering threats X2, Assault with a weapon and Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. LUMSDEN has been remanded in custody and a court date has yet to be set.
No other individuals were injured during this incident.
In conjunction with the Wood Buffalo General Investigation Section, RCMP Major Crimes Unit from Edmonton is investigating these matter.
The names of the officers in relation to this matter will not be released.

Out of control driver apprehended in Edmonton area
On Saturday morning, July 5, 2014, Edmonton Police Service began an investigation into three separate motor vehicle hit and run collisions which reportedly involved a stolen, silver Mazda car. The car was allegedly taken from its owner in the area of 106 Street and 104 Avenue at 11:42 a.m.
Stony Plain/Spruce Grove RCMP were advised by EPS at noon on Saturday of the collisions and that the suspect vehicle may be traveling into their detachment area as it was last seen westbound on the Yellowhead Trail near 156 Street.
At 12:25 p.m., the suspect vehicle was reported to be driving erratically on Highway 43 near Gunn. The driver of the Mazda allegedly struck one vehicle on the highway and continued to attempt to hit other motorists. Stony Plain/Spruce Grove RCMP and Mayerthorpe RCMP detachment officers responded and located the suspect vehicle at the Alexis First Nations Reserve. Police attempted to stop the suspect vehicle to no avail and a pursuit was engaged by the RCMP. As the suspect vehicle returned to Highway 43, police disengaged from the pursuit in light of public safety concerns.
The vehicle was located a short time later in Onoway. The suspect reportedly struck a parked car and subsequently attempted to steal another vehicle that was occupied by a driver. RCMP members were able to box in and contain the suspect and the vehicle. The suspect was uncooperative with police and resisted arrest. A conducted energy weapon (CEW) was deployed in the execution of the arrest.
Fortunately, no civilians were injured as a result of the multiple collisions and property damage allegedly caused by the suspect. A police officer sustained minor injuries during the incident and was treated and released from hospital.
Through coordinated efforts between Edmonton Police Service and RCMP 26 year old Lonnie LETENDRE has been charged by EPS with:
- Robbery
- Dangerous driving
- Failure to stop vehicle evade officer
- Disqualified driving
- Breach of recognizance
- and charged by RCMP with:
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Failure to stop vehicle evade police
- Obstruct or resist a peace officer
- Assault with a weapon
- Disqualified driving
- Fail to comply with a condition

While conducting further follow-up on this file, a third male was identified as being inside a residence in the Bankview area of Drumheller. This male had an outstanding arrest warrant and had fled from police in past.
In the interest of safety, the RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed and resolved the situation without injury to the Public, Police Officers, or the suspect. Nighttime break-in to residence in Calgary
The Calgary Police Service is investigating a nighttime break and enter that occurred in the community of Erin Woods.
On Saturday, June 5, 2014, at approximately 4 a.m., an individual broke into a home on Erin Meadow Crescent S.E., by prying open a basement window. After rummaging through an unoccupied room, the suspect entered the room of a male resident. The victim awoke and yelled at the suspect, who ran out the front door of the home and fled the area in an unknown direction.
Enhanced enforcement in Cochrane area
An initiative to enhance Police presence within the Town of Cochrane , rural locations of Cochrane and waterways will kick off July 10th 2014. Uniformed RCMP officers will patrol on foot, utilize bicycles and quads to provide a high level of Police visibility and enhanced enforcement of parks and trails to maximize safety and curtail Criminal or suspicious activity throughout the summer season and bodies of water will be patrolled by boat to ensure compliance of Federal and Provincial laws and Federal safety Regulations. Boaters are reminded to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations before their journey onto the water. These enhanced patrols are to benefit the community and to ensure safety.
