Pembina River rescue
On July 15 at approximately 7:30 pm the RCMP from Evansburg received a complaint via cell phone from some tubers on the Pembina River that they were lost. The seven young females from Edmonton had set out for a fun day of tubing but overshot their exit point and were now lost. The RCMP investigated and mobilized the resources of the Edmonton Police Service helicopter, Air 1. The Air 1 crew located the tubers and were able to negotiate a precarious landing to check on the welfare of the tubers. They evacuated one young female due to concerns over exposure and brought her to a nearby ambulance. The remaining group had to wait for some time to be rescued by The Yellowhad County Fire Department, The Parkland County Fire Department and other EMS. The rescue operation ended approximately 10 hours later at 5:30 am when the last of the tubers were removed from the river. Due to the remoteness of the area and the dense bush, access to the river had to be cut and negotiated with a side-by-side vehicle.
This is the third incident in the past month where EMS and a helicopter had to be used to search for tubers on the Pembina River in the Evansburg area. One recent incident ended in a fatality when a kayaker drowned and was found several kilometers downstream of The Pembina Provincial Park in Evansburg. The RCMP would like to remind Pembina River users that if they set out on the river they are entering a wilderness area that is not patrolled or easily accessed by emergency personnel. Basic survival preparation is essential. Many tubers are clearly not considering the ramifications of being ill prepared for their adventure. Hypothermia, heat exposure, and dehydration are just some of the potential hazards of being on the river for long periods of time. The river is very twisty. This coupled with low water makes time on the river considerably longer than planned. On average the Evansburg RCMP responds to a few calls each week over the summer months to help search for lost tubers. Most are resolved without further allocation of EMS resources.
The Evansburg RCMP would like to thank the Yellowhead County Fire Department, The Edmonton Police Service, The Parkland County Fire Department and local Ambulances for their professionalism in bringing this mission to a successful conclusion.
2 serious motorcycle accidents in Okotoks
Shortly after 7:00 a.m. on the 18th of July 2014, a Pickup truck driving North on 112th Street at 292 Ave, was struck from behind by a motorcycle. The 41 year old male driver was thrown about 25 feet from his motorcycle.
He was transported by STARS ambulance to Foothills Hospital with life-threatening head, neck and leg injuries. The 61 year old driver of the pickup truck was not injured. The investigation is ongoing, however alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors.
At about 12:30 pm the same day a vehicle westbound on Hwy 7 turned left across the path of an Eastbound motorcycle. The 19 year old driver of the Volkswagen Jetta was not injured. The 50 year old man from Calgary driving the motorcycle, sustained critical, life-threatening injuries and was transported to Foothills Hospital. Neither speed nor alcohol were involved. There were numerous witness and other drivers who stopped to render assistance at the scene, including an off-duty EMT. Hwy 7 at Southridge Drive was shut down for several hours while Okotoks RCMP and a Collision Re-constructionist from RCMP traffic Services completed their investigation. Charges are pending against the driver of the Jetta.
Police are urging all drivers to remember that summer time means sharing our roads and highways with thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts. Everyone needs to get home safely tonight.
St. Albert youth arrested with firearm
On Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at approximately 10:00 p.m., St. Albert RCMP received information from a concerned adult resident that a young male was walking from a vehicle towards Lions' Park holding a black handgun by his side. Immediate attendance at the park by several RCMP officers failed to locate the suspect in the park, but he was arrested on the Red Willow Trail adjacent to the park within minutes. As the suspect was reported to have a handgun, he, along with the 4 young people with him, was detained with a high risk takedown approach by RCMP.
The 17 year old male suspect, a past resident of St. Albert, when arrested was found to have had an unloaded black CO2 powered BB gun that was very realistic looking. The BB gun was seized by RCMP under the City of St. Albert By-law prohibiting air guns in any city parks.
This investigation in continuing and no charges have been laid at this time.

Late night Leduc theft spree thwarted
In the early hours of July 5th, at 1:16 AM Leduc RCMP were alerted by two citizens who observed a male repeatedly stealing items from the Canadian Tire and then bringing them over a fence to where the male lived
Leduc RCMP officers responded to this call, located and immediately arrested the accused. Numerous items with Canadian Tire stickers were found by the accused. A further investigation led to officers obtaining a search warrant for the accused residence. Police seized over a half dozen stolen night vision monoculars and other new in box items believed to be stolen from the nearby Canadian Tire the previous week.
"A watchful eye allowed us to catch someone red handed" Notes Cst. Julian CELMS of the Leduc RCMP. "Look what was accomplished with a single suspicious person call to police: an arrest, search warrant leading to recovering more stolen items and a string of thefts solved. It's an awesome feeling as a police officer to get great information from our public that leads to charges."
A week later Leduc RCMP were called to the accused's apartment (which he had been evicted from). The accused had broken in and upon police arrival barricaded himself in the apartment. Officers had to force their way into the apartment to arrest the accused. Once in the apartment, they located stolen credit cards, identification, cheques and electronics.
From these police occurrences, 53 year old Leduc resident Abdul EL-ARIS has been charged with 18 Criminal Code offences ranging from Break and Enter a business, Theft Over Five Thousand Dollars, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over Five Thousand Dollars, Property Obtained by Crime Under Five Thousand Dollars and Illegal Possession of Government Documents. El-ARIS remains in custody, his next court date is July 24th, 2014.

Lending a hand at Lac Ste Anne Pilgrimage
Since 1889, First Nations and Metis people from across Canada have been travelling to the shores of Lac Ste Anne for a spiritual gathering celebrating the Feast of Saint Anne. The pilgrimage allows Aboriginal people to come together to visit, share and celebrate much as they did in traditional summer gatherings. Today as many as 20,000 pilgrims make their way to the shores of Lac Ste. Anne, many coming in search of healing and spiritual renewal.
RCMP officers from Spruce Grove/Stony Plain are on site at the Pilgrimage, to ensure a safe and secure environment throughout the week.
