On June 5 the Alberta Emerald Foundation hosted the 23rd Annual Emerald Awards recognizing and celebrating environmental initiatives undertaken by youth, educators, corporations, individuals, community groups and governments in Alberta. A record 17 Emerald Awards were presented to inspiring Albertans.
The sold out audience, which included the Honourable Robin Campbell, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, as well as The Honourable Diana McQueen, Minister of Energy and The Honourable Kyle Fawcett, Minister of Jobs, Skills Training & Labour, saw the presentation of a record 17 Emerald Awards in ten categories.
"While much attention is directed to Alberta's environmental challenges, there are so many unsung heroes working hard in diverse ways to protect, enhance and steward our environment," said Alberta Emerald Foundation Executive Director Emmy Stuebing. "Tonight, we were delighted to shine a much-deserved spotlight on seventeen of our province's environmental heroes."
The awards show also featured the debut of an original song by emerging Alberta folk-duo, The Doll Sisters, and then a celebration reception where the diverse audience could network and celebrate Alberta's environmental leaders.
The Stavely based Waldron Grazing Co-operative Ltd. and Calgary based Ducks Unlimited were two of the recipients.
Waldron Grazing Co-Operative Ltd. - Waldron Project
Located in Alberta’s Southern Foothills, the Waldron Property is the largest remaining block of deeded land along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, and last year, the Waldron Grazing Co-operative Ltd. made Canadian conservation history by voting in favour of working with the Nature Conservancy of Canada to place a conservation easement on the 30,536-acre Waldron Property. This agreement is the largest conservation easement in both Canadian and NCC history and marks the first time that NCC has successfully engaged a rancher-owned co-operative in negotiating a conservation easement. The judges remarked that this is a huge size of impact and a great example of collaboration.
Ducks Unlimited - Project Webfoot
Ducks Unlimited Canada operates this environmental education program which is currently celebrating its twentieth consecutive year of operation in Alberta and teaches about wetlands conservation, delivering programming for over 100,000 students.
