Investigation has revealed that the suspects, none of whom are residents of Hinton, were active throughout the evening in an area from Dorin Drive to Sunwapta Drive and numerous vehicles were believed to have been targeted. Be wary of paving contractor’s claims of left over asphalt

Service Alberta is warning of seasonal “pavers.” The paver arrives at a consumer’s home without warning and typically claims to be working in the area, has leftover asphalt, and offers a discount for paving jobs. Consumers allege the quality of asphalt and work was poor, and driveways began falling apart within days. Some contracts were more than $20,000. It is also alleged some contracts did not comply with provincial rules for door-to-door sales.

On March 25, 2014, George Thomas Stewart, doing business as G.S. Paving and Highway Maintenance, pleaded guilty in Red Deer Provincial Court to two counts of deceiving and misleading consumers under Alberta’s Fair Trading Act. He was fined $8,000 on each count and was ordered to pay restitution to four victims totaling $37,162.

Edward John Stewart, doing business as Western Asphalt, was charged with three counts under the Fair Trading Act, including deceiving and misleading consumers. A warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to appear in Westlock Provincial Court on March 26, 2014. He remains at large.

It is an offence under Alberta’s Fair Trading Act for a business knowingly to sell goods or services from which consumers will not reasonably receive a benefit. Consumers have the right to cancel a contract from a direct seller within one year, if the contract does not comply with the legislation.

Consumers can protect themselves when hiring a contractor by obtaining three or four estimates, comparing prices, checking the company’s record with the Better Business Bureau and Service Alberta, and ensuring contracts reference their cancellation rights. Albertans can find more information from Service Alberta’s Dealing with Door-to-Door Sales consumer tips at www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/ConsumerTipsheets.cfm

B&E to Coronation Library and Golden Age centre

Upon making entry to the Golden Age centre the suspect(s) then made entry into the Coronation Library. There was considerable damage done to two steal doors and locks inside the buildings. If you or anyone you know has any knowledge of this incident you are asked to contact the Coronation RCMP Detachment at 403-578-3666 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Umbrella mistaken for a gun in Fort McMurray

At approximately 7:50 a.m. Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to reports of a male walking on Confederation Way towards Dickensfield carrying a firearm or sword.

RCMP patrolled the area and located the male on Dickens Drive by the Shell gas station. RCMP members were able to determine that the reported firearm was in fact an umbrella that was being carried on the male’s back. At a quick glance the umbrella did resemble a possible firearm or sword and required further investigation to determine that it was not a weapon.

Nearby schools were immediately informed of the possible threat. Once the RCMP concluded that the male was carrying an umbrella and there was no threat schools were advised.
