Record $9 million drug seizure by ALERT

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT), in partnership with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), has made one of the largest drug seizures in Western Canada. Nearly $9 million worth of marihuana, hashish, and heroin was seized after a series of arrests in the Edmonton region.
The record drug seizure included:
292 kilograms of marihuana, with an estimated street value of $2.9 million;
14.1 kilograms of heroin, with an estimated street value of $5.64 million;
6 kilograms of hashish, with an estimated street value of $150,000.

“A seizure of this magnitude highlights the success ALERT is having across the province in tackling and disrupting organized crime,” said ALERT Insp. Darcy Strang. “Drugs are a commodity for organized crime groups, whose dependency on violence and addiction negatively impacts every community in Alberta.”

ALERT Edmonton concluded the five-month drug trafficking investigation on June 4th.Three Edmonton men were arrested at a West Edmonton storage facility and 95 kilograms of marihuana and six kilograms of hashish were seized. Meanwhile, two men driving a semi-tractor trailer were arrested at the CBSA’s Commercial facility at the Edmonton International Airport. "I am proud of the work that our officers do, each and every day, in protecting our borders and keeping dangerous drugs from reaching the streets of our communities,” said Kim R. Scoville, CBSA Regional Director General for the Prairie Region.

The heroin seizure is the largest ever in Alberta, eclipsing the previous high of 12 kilograms seized by CBSA officials at the Calgary airport on April 24, 2013. Lottery scam duo busted

The Calgary Police Service Economic Crimes Unit has charged a man and a woman in relation to a lottery scam following a Canada-wide investigation.

On Thursday, March 20, 2014, a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 0-100 block of Glamis Drive S.W. as part of an ongoing investigation. Edmonton mother charged in 2013 Mink Lake drowning

Police in Spruce Grove/Stony Plain have laid charges against an Edmonton mother following the tragic drowning of her young son.

On June 30 of last year, a three year old boy drowned in Mink Lake, Southwest of Stony Plain. After many months of information gathering and a comprehensive investigation, police sought a Crown opinion, resulting in the recommendation for the following charges.

42 year-old Carmen Gaye STEWART of Edmonton has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, and failing to provide the necessaries of life. She is not being held in custody, and will make her first appearance in Stony Plain Provincial Court on Wednesday, July 23rd.

This was a troubling event for all involved, from bystanders through to emergency services responders. "With the advent of lake season in Alberta, police would like to remind the community to always keep young children within arms reach when in the water", states Cpl. Active supervision of children when they are around or in the water, the use of life-jackets, adult training in first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and children’s swimming lessons can help prevent drowning.
