Three RCMP officers injured, two others dead after incident in St. Paul (updated)

RCMP press release

Three RCMP officers were injured and one male suspect died as a result of a series of incidents which occurred in a residential area and the downtown core of St. Paul shortly before 6:00 pm on May 9, 2014.

This situation unfolded when St. Paul RCMP detachment officers heard gun shots somewhere outside the detachment located on 55 Street in St. Paul, Alberta.  Upon the officers going outside to investigate, they observed a black Dodge pickup fleeing the detachment parking lot.

A few minutes later a call for service from a distraught male was received at the RCMP Emergency call center to attend a residence a few blocks from the detachment.  Other St. Paul officers and medical personnel attended and the injured male was quickly transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  The identity of this male is withheld at this time upon the notification of next-of-kin.

The black Dodge pickup was then called in by a citizen on 55th Street traveling at a high rate of speed.  Officers suspected it was the same pickup they had seen flee the detachment earlier and upon police patrol, the male driving the truck shot and struck a male RCMP officer while the officer was operating his police vehicle.  The suspect driver rammed his vehicle into another police car and in doing so injured the female officer who ended up trapped down in her vehicle.  Other officers attended the scene and the suspect started shooting at them.  Other officers arrived and there was an exchange of gunfire.

The female officer had to be extracted by first responders and airlifted to an Edmonton hospital.  A third male officer was injured and suffered minor injuries during the altercation.  The male suspect died at the scene.

It is unknown at this time whether the injury and death of the male at the residence is related to the driver of the Dodge pickup or the other incidents.

ASIRT has been called and are investigating.  RCMP units, including the Forensic Identification Section, Major Crimes North and several officers from surrounding detachments are providing assistance.

The downtown area of St. Paul was very busy at the time of the incident and it is believed that several people witnessed the incident.

The two male RCMP officers injured have been treated and released from hospital and the female officer remains in hospital with serious however non-life threatening injuries.

Support is being given to the officers injured, their families, the other officers involved and any other employees affected by this matter.

Autopsies are tentatively scheduled for this coming Tuesday, May 13, 2014 and no other media updates will be given until such. The identity of the officers injured and the deceased suspect will not be released.

UPDATE (May 10, 6:00 pm*):

The RCMP can confirm that the death of a Catholic priest in St. Paul yesterday is considered a homicide. The name of the victim cannot be confirmed by the RCMP at this time as next of kin have not been notified.

The RCMP continue to investigate this homicide in an effort to determine whether the victim’s death is related to the events that resulted in the injury of three RCMP members and the death of the suspect, John Carlos Quadros, age 55, of St. Paul.

At present, there is no evidence to suggest this homicide is a random occurrence. The RCMP are conducting an extensive investigation into all of the events that occurred on May 9, and all facts and evidence gathered from multiple scenes will determine the direction of the investigation.

One RCMP member injured in yesterday’s events remains in hospital in Edmonton with non-life threatening injuries.
