Charges pending in Calgary double homicide

Calgary Police Service

Charges are pending as the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit continues to investigate the deaths of two women in the southeast.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., on Sunday, May 4, 2014, police were called for reports of a stabbing at a home in the 6400 block of Penbrooke Drive S.E. When officers arrived they found one woman already deceased. A second woman was transported to hospital, where she later died. A third woman was taken to hospital in non life-threatening condition, where she was treated for her injuries and released.

The suspect fled the scene and was located a short time later and arrested. He was transported to a local hospital suffering from self-inflicted injuries.

An autopsy has been completed on the woman who died in hospital. She has been identified as Fahmida VELJI-VISRAM, 29, of Calgary. It was determined she died as a result of a stabbing.

It is believed she was a friend of the other deceased woman. An autopsy on this victim will not be completed until tomorrow, so she will not be identified until that time. However, it is believed she is the estranged wife of the suspect.

Investigators have not yet spoken to the suspect, who remains in hospital in stable condition.

Two counts of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault are pending.

Red Deer RCMP warn public of fake gold scam

Red Deer RCMP are warning the public that an annual scam has resurfaced in Red Deer. Seven reports in the past few weeks have come in of a male and female who approach people in parking lots and try to sell them fake gold jewellery. The scammers’ usual approach is to tell potential victims that they are down on their luck and need to sell the jewellery in order to get back home. In several of the Red Deer incidents, victims report that the scammers are accompanied by a child; the vehicle the scammers drive is often a rental vehicle.

In two cases in the past month, Red Deerians have been defrauded of significant amounts of money in fake gold scams. A similar scam, which hasn’t been seen in Red Deer yet this year but tends to appear in the summer months, also involves attempts to sell jewellery in parking lots. In this version, scammers are aggressive in putting their jewellery on victims; during that physical contact, the scammers steal the jewellery the victims were originally wearing.

If you have information that can assist the police in their investigation please contact Red Deer RCMP at 403.343.5575. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477 or report it online at www.tipsubmit.com.
