Blackfalds RCMP and RCMP helicopter capture man fleeing from Police.

On May 11, 2014 at approximately 1:00 am the Blackfalds RCMP were checking a suspicious truck turning off Aspelund road onto Highway 2 southbound. Police emergency equipment was activated. The suspect vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and then suddenly took off. Police attempted to close the distance between the subject vehicle and themselves.

An RCMP helicopter with call sign C-FMPP was airborne and on patrol in the area. It was contacted to assist in the pursuit of the vehicle. C-FMPP obtained a visual on the subject vehicle, a Black Ford F150. The vehicle had shut off its lights and went through the ditch in order to change direction and was now northbound on Highway 2. C-FMPP provided direction to the RCMP members on the ground, advising where the subject vehicle was at all times. The black Ford F-150 traveled north on Highway 275 at moderate speeds. A police vehicle with emergency lights activated attempted to block the path, however the truck rammed the police car and continued on. The truck returned to Highway 2, proceeding northbound. Lacombe City police were advised and provided assistance. The truck turned on Highway 12 heading west towards Rimbey, during this time ramming a second police car to evade capture. C-FMPP continued to monitor the location of the Ford F-150, relaying this information to the police vehicles in the area. The Subject vehicle later turned off onto a trail, subsequently running off the road into a small body of water. With C-FMPP providing directions to police units on the ground, RCMP members arrived at the location and the lone male occupant of the truck was placed into custody. No injuries were sustained during the pursuit of this subject, however two police cars did sustain damage.

Enforcement ramping up for May long weekend

The May long weekend is one of the busiest times of year for outdoor recreation, and the Government of Alberta is encouraging Albertans and visitors to responsibly enjoy the province’s outdoor spaces and recreational amenities.

Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Public Security, recently highlighted what Alberta’s Fish and Wildlife Officers, Conservation Officers, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers and Traffic Sheriffs will be doing this coming long weekend. They will be patrolling Alberta’s roadways, water bodies, parks, and public land. Together with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, they will also conduct check stops and off-highway vehicle compliance checks and inform the public about safe recreation practices, laws and regulations.

Minister of Justice and PublicSecurity Jonathan Denis (second from right) with Law enforcement personnel
“With the snow finally gone, I'm hoping Albertans will get to enjoy the outdoors this weekend and have fun. Law enforcement will work with the public across the province to encourage safe recreation and driving practices, and will be on the lookout for problems—we all have a role in playing safe, being responsible, and respecting the land.” - Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General

Alberta’s fish and wildlife officers work with the public to ensure fish and wildlife legislation is understood and followed, and to prevent conflicts with wildlife. And in the course of these duties, they also help enforce the Public Lands Act.

Commercial vehicle enforcement officers enhance road safety by ensuring commercial vehicles meet Alberta’s high safety standards. And over the long weekend, they will also be checking recreational and off-highway vehicles.

Conservation officers will safeguard people visiting provincial parks and protect the flora and fauna. Together with parks service rangers, they will also assist Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development’s public lands officers with enforcement on public lands to make sure they are used responsibly this long weekend.

Traffic sheriffs will continue to patrol the highways for speeders and other unsafe drivers. And as our provincial police service, the RCMP upholds our laws, protects our families and keeps our communities safe and secure.

It is important to get out and enjoy the spring sunshine, but equally important is the need to protect ourselves and our environment.
