Suspect dead, officer injured in Edmonton incident
On Sunday, May 11, 2014, at approximately 8:30 p.m. the Edmonton Police Service executed a warrant in the area of 53 Avenue and 149 A Street. An exchange of gun fire took place between a suspect and police.
EMS responded and the suspect was pronounced deceased on scene. An Edmonton Police Officer was injured and transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been notified and will be taking over the investigation. ASIRT investigates all officer involved shootings.
Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Jonathan Denis issued a statement in response to the incident: "For the second time within a few days, a member of Alberta's law enforcement team was seriously injured on the job. This serves as another stark reminder of the dangers our police and peace officers face daily. While many of us celebrated Mother's Day with our loved ones, thousands of Alberta men and women put their lives at risk to keep our communities safe. While details are short at this time, I want to offer my prayers to the injured Edmonton Police Service officer and his family, friends and fellow officers, and to thank them all for the sacrifices they make."
