Community Theatre Project proposal takes a new turn

Rotary Club of Pincher Creek press release

The proposed Community Theatre Project, spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Pincher Creek, will go forward with new and broader considerations. At its meeting, held on Monday May 5, the Rotary Executive concluded that its first idea, to co-locate with the new St Michaels School renovation, was not feasible. “Their construction plans are underway” says incoming Rotary President Scott Korbett. “We will not be able to meet the time deadlines to be a part of the modernization project”.

The theatre project proposal has attracted very strong support from many individuals and community groups, so Rotary will develop the business plan and sustainability model for the project. There is not a definite location at this time. Proposed sites will become part of a new concept plan.

So far, Rotary has not spent any dollars toward this project and has now committed a small budget to work on the business plan. “We hope to have this done within 3 months”, says Korbett. “We need to consider options for building design and utilization and create a positive and sustainable business model. If we know our community can afford to operate the facility, then we will work on building it.” Rotary will continue to provide a lead role in this project and is excited about the opportunity for service clubs and user groups, local, provincial and federal governments to work together, creating a benefit and legacy for the community.

“We are very grateful for the information sharing we gained from the Holy Spirit School Division and the school,” Korbett goes on to say. “So many great ideas have been offered by the community and we are excited. We just need more time to consider all the options and make good plans. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the leaders of our community.”

It’s a big idea, and the consensus of discussion suggests the community is up for the challenge. Korbett enthusiastically states, “The project will add value to our community and that's the entire purpose here.”

I would be interested in a member of Rotary finding out why the 300 seat Carriage House theatre in Cardston has nothing on their calendar of events for the rest of 2014 and nothing for 2015. There was one production with 8 evenings of performances in February 2014 (tickets costing $16 I believe) and 3 Children's performances in early April. Is that theatre truly sitting empty 354 days of this year? It doesn't appear to be generating a lot of revenue. Posting an answer to my question here would be appreciated.

I just phoned the theater and listened to their upcoming events. It sounds like three different productions are playing this summer between July 2 and Aug 23. They will be updating their web site by May 1. (or so I guess).
