St. Michael's Choir teacher Mrs. Shelly Alexander says the choir has had a great year so far. Alexander has been in charge of choir, currently including 50 students from grades 2 - 5, for the last 4 years. "We did do the Symphony back in December in Lethbridge, it was the Kid's Concert Symphony, and there were many choirs. We recorded two songs on CD in the fall for the Christmas Concert CD for the School Division, and we sang O Canada in February during a Hurricane’s Hockey game." Their latest challenge was the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival, and they have recently were invited to perform at the Crowsnest Symphony Spring Concert (March 8).

The Crowsnest Pass Music Festival was held at Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore on February 24. St. Michael's Choir sang two challenging pieces at that event. "The one was especially challenging," explained Mrs. Alexander. "It was a French tongue twister called 'Ton Thé', it means 'Does your tea help your cough?' It was hilarious." She said she was very pleased with the students' performances. "They were marvels." Carrie Cooley and Pat Toney accompanied Ton Thé with a piano duet. The choir also performed 'A Simple Song of Love' at the festival.
The choir placed First with Distinction in their category, received the top choir award, and was presented with a scholarship from Servus Credit Union at the final Festival Concert on March 2.
The choir has a new challenge. "I got a call last night from the Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra and they are having their Spring Concert at the Baptist Church on May 8. So I confirmed that we would make that work." The choir is planning to perform 4 songs at that event.
Alexander talked about how it affects the students' mother classes to have choir practices. "Kudos to the all the St. Michael's elementary teaching staff for their sacrifice to make choir happen. It's difficult, we have to adjust our schedules to allow those children to go to those rehearsals. We have created an improvised rotational flex block."
"Transportation is always a challenge, because we are a big group. We need both buses, and parent drivers." Alexander said, expressing her appreciation to all the parents and volunteers that have helped the choir this year.
