Matthew Halton High School students had the chance to expand their social awareness in the fresh air this morning, Wednesday March 12, when they headed outside to attend a Smashing Racism rally. For a small fee the students could help demolish a car. "It's mainly symbolic," said Principal Sandra McDuffe. The students have been studying racism, and attended a presentation in the gymnasium before heading out to the car.
Those that wanted to take a swing at it had to use safety precautions, and put some money in the hat. Music supplied by Stu Schramm and kept the energy level turned to high. An assortment of implements were available including a sledgehammer, a shop hammer, and "The Educator" - a baseball bat. According to Shop teacher Travis Epp the car had been used in the auto shop program at the school. Stripped of usable parts, it was used for this event and will now be sold as scrap metal, adding a few more dollars to the fund.

Anti bullying, anti racism, and raising funds for a village in India are a few of the causes that Matthew Halton High School students support. They recently held pink shirt day, when everyone was encouraged to wear pink in support of anti-bullying.
At the end of the rally students were invited to prepare a presentation to bring to the next student council meeting on Monday, March 17 outlining how they think the funds raised by this event should be used.
