Since the beginning of 2014, the Wood Buffalo RCMP has responded to 577 False 911 calls. These 911 calls are often “pocket dials” or an emergency button being pressed on a cell phone in error. Although this type of call is not an emergency it still requires the same initial investigation as any other emergency call thus tying up police resources and not allowing them to tend to real emergency situations.
When it comes to your cell phone, do not just throw it into a purse or into a bag as the chances of an emergency button being hit in error is far greater. Ensure you lock your phone prior to placing it into a pocket. If allowing a small child to play with your cell phone, monitor them to ensure they can’t or don’t accidentally press an emergency button. With older children, talk to them and explain that 911 should be used for emergencies only.
If you do dial 911 by accident, stay on the phone to provide your information. Inform the dispatcher that you dialed in error and there is no emergency. This simplifies the process as the dispatcher will be required to call you back if you hang up the phone.
Remember, 911 is for emergency purposes and should only be dialed in an emergency situation. 911 was not designed for people to call to make general inquiries. If you have a general inquiry or your matter is not an emergency please contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780-788-4000.
RCMP seeks public assistance to identify purchase order fraudsters
Red Deer RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance to identify a series of suspects who have been fraudulently using a stolen purchase order book at various home renovation businesses in Red Deer, Olds, Innisfail, Rimbey and Rocky Mountain House. The purchase order book was stolen from Shunda Consulting and Construction Management Ltd. RCMP believe the frauds took place between February 11 and February 19, 2014.
Photos of fraud suspects and vehicle:
In some cases, the fraudsters purchased power tools and other large items. In other cases they roused the suspicions of staff and left without successfully purchasing items. Multiple suspects have committed these frauds, and some of the invoices have been duplicated and used numerous times, with a total estimated loss of $25,000. RCMP are actively investigating a number of possible suspects.
