"K" Division Ceremony Welcomes Assistant Commissioner Marianne Ryan

On Wednesday, January 29, 2014, special guests and RCMP employees were on hand to witness Assistant Commissioner Marianne Ryan assume the command of the RCMP in Alberta ("K" Division) from Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan.
“I can’t think of a greater privilege than to lead such a dedicated team of employees who are truly committed to public safety in this dynamic and progressive province,” said A/Commr. Ryan, Commanding Officer of “K” Division, “I’m humbled by this opportunity, and I look forward to this next chapter in Alberta’s rich history with the RCMP.”
A/Commr. Ryan grew up on a farm near London, Ontario, and joined the RCMP in 1982. Since January 2011, she has served as the Officer-in-Charge of Criminal Operations in Alberta. She has extensive operational police experience at the local, national and international levels, including leadership roles in major investigations targeting organized crime. A/Commr. Ryan also brings considerable administrative experience to the role of Commanding Officer of the more than 4,000 RCMP employees working in communities throughout Alberta.
“I have every confidence in Marianne,” said Bob Paulson, Commissioner of the RCMP. “She comes to the job with a wealth of knowledge and experience.”
As Commanding Officer of “K” Division, A/Commr. Ryan assumes the responsibility of leading Alberta’s Provincial Police Service. There are 112 RCMP detachments in Alberta and more than 1.5 million Albertans live in the division jurisdictions.

Fatal MVC on Highway 1
Rocky View County - At approximately 07:20 today Strathmore RCMP along with Chestermere Fire Rescue and Alberta Sheriffs responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 1 at Range Road 281.
An Audi A4 was attempting to cross Highway 1 when it was hit on the drivers side by an oncoming Dodge Ram pick-up traveling east on Highway 1. The 27 year old female driver of the Audi, a Chestermere resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two occupants of the pick up truck were transported to area hospitals.
Speed and alcohol are believed not to be factors in the collision and road conditions were clear and dry. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time.
Highway 1 east bound at RR 281 was closed for several hours while police investigated the incident however has since re-opened.
Multi-vehicle pile-up near Fox Creek
On Wednesday January 29, 2014 around 10:15 AM Fox Creek RCMP responded to a multi vehicle collision on Highway 43 four kms North of Fox Creek. Fox Creek Fire Department and EMS were also on scene where 5 semi units had been involved in a collision. All five units were travelling east on 43 when the collision took place. One of the units hit the rear of another causing a major collision resulting in the second semi's load of lumber to be spilled onto the highway. As a result of this collision another semi unit began slowing down and was also struck from behind by another semi unit. This last semi unit had significant impact causing the cab compartment to completely separate from the frame landing on the highway upside down. The fifth semi unit hit the ditch to avoid the collision. In total 5 vehicles with 7 people involved, 5 of those requiring medical assistance. All were and are being treated at the Fox Creek Hospital.
Highway 43 East bound lanes were closed and remain closed at this time. An RCMP Collision Analyst did attend the scene. Currently crews are working at cleaning up the wreckage and preparing the highway to be re-open. It is anticipated to be re-opened by 7PM. Currently, traffic is being re-routed on the west bound lanes with traffic flowing in both directions on the west bound side. La Prairie is on scene and assisting with Traffic Control.
All parties injured are expected to make full recoveries. Ages of the injured range from 2 years old to 72 years of age. Alcohol was not a factor in this collision, but weather was.
Death of 16 year old Eckville boy confirmed
RCMP with the assistance of the Calgary Medical Examiner have confirmed that the body discovered near Highway 12 and Highway 761 on January 27, 2014 is that of the 16 year old male reported missing from Eckville, AB on January 26, 2014.
The Red Deer Major Crime Unit, Rocky Mountain House RCMP, and the Calgary Medical Examiner continue to investigate this death. The cause of death is pending further results, there is no indication that this incident is criminal in nature.
The identity of the deceased is not being released at the request of the family.
Man flees scene of Mayerthorpe collision
On January 28th 2014 at 6:14 p.m. Mayerthorpe RCMP responded to a two vehicle collision with injuries on Highway 43, west of Sangudo. Mayerthorpe EMS and the Sangudo Fire Department also attended the scene.
As a result of further investigation, it is believed that a 2010 Red Jeep Wrangler had exited Sangudo traveling west bound in the wrong lane of the divided highway. The Jeep collided head on with an east bound pick up truck. The driver of the pick up received minor injuries and was later released from the hospital.
The male driver of the Jeep Wrangler fled the scene on foot. RCMP attempted to locate the male but were unsuccessful. It is believed the male may have last been in the area of Highway 43 and Highway 757 North. It is possible that the male was picked up as a hitch hiker. The male is described as approximately 25 years old, 5'10" to 6' and wearing a white coat with dark pants. Assault in Smoky Lake
On January 22, 2014, at approximately 9:30 pm, the Smoky Lake RCMP, along with Vilna Fire Department and EMS, were dispatched to a rural residence in the County of Smoky Lake, near Goodfish Lake, Alberta.
Upon arrival emergency crews discovered that a 35 year old male had been assaulted at the residence and sustained life threatening injuries. The male was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton via STARS air ambulance, where he remains in critical condition.
On January 24 police arrested and charged 29 year old Emery CARDINAL of Goodfish Lake with aggravated assault. He is to be released on bail with a number of strict conditions. The victim's name is being withheld at this time.
RCMP are continuing to investigate the matter although no other suspects are being sought at this time.

RCMP Red Deer City reminds drivers when to report motor vehicle collisions
Winter driving makes motor vehicle collisions more likely, especially when the streets ice up as a result of melt-freeze cycles. Red Deer City RCMP would like to remind drivers when and how to report motor vehicle collisions, for the safety of all and for the efficient use of RCMP resources.
Do you need police at the scene of a motor vehicle collision?If there is a serious injury or fatality, call 911. If any involved vehicle is not drivable, or if any driver fails to produce registration or insurance, call the RCMP complaint line at 403-343-5575 (24 hours). If the vehicles are drivable and the above factors are not applicable, you don’t need police at the scene.
Do you need to report a collision to police after the fact?
You must make a police report after the collision if there is any injury, even a minor one, or if there appears to be $2000 or more in damage (if you aren’t sure, you can get an estimate first).
Exchange information with the other driver:
You need to exchange registration, insurance and drivers’ license information with the other driver(s). If you have a cell phone, it’s easiest to take photographs that information. Make sure to also take pictures of the damage to all involved vehicles and the collision location.
Report the collision in person
You will need to provide the registration, insurance and drivers’ license information you exchanged with the other driver, damage to involved vehicles and the collision location. You will need to fill out a collision report.
Reporting a Hit and Run
If you are the victim of a hit and run, report it to the police. If you see the other vehicle, record its make, model, and license plate number – partial license plates may be useful.

Fatal collision on Highway 2 near Airdrie
Members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit responded to the scene of a serious collision on the QEII just north of the City of Airdrie on Wednesday morning, January 29. Shortly after 10:30 am , a Nissan Frontier pickup was north bound on QEII when the driver and lone occupant of the pickup lost control, crossing into the south bound lanes where it collided with a south bound semi truck.
Members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit responded to the scene of a serious collision on the QEII just north of the City of Airdrie on Wednesday morning, January 29. Shortly after 10:30 am , a Nissan Frontier pickup was north bound on QEII when the driver and lone occupant of the pickup lost control, crossing into the south bound lanes where it collided with a south bound semi truck.
Tragically, the 35 year old male from Calgary, Alberta, who was the driver and lone occupant of the Nissan Frontier pickup has succumbed to his injuries. His name is not being release pending notification of next of kin.
An RCMP Forensic Collision Re-constructionist was called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

Theft of welding tools near Kitscoty
On the Morning of January 18th, Kitscoty RCMP received a complaint of a break and enter to a construction business located on Range Road 14, 1 mile south of Highway 16. Sometime overnight unknown persons cut a lock on a gate and entered the compound where 2 large welding units which were bolted to skids were removed and taken. It is believed that in order to move two large welding units the persons involved would need either multiple trucks or a large service truck. The persons also gained entry to a tool storage building on the site by breaking a deadbolt lock, from inside they took a large quantity of tools related to oilfield and welding services. The welding units were described as a blue "Miller Trailblazer 325" and a red "Lincoln 305G".

On January 29th, 2014 at approximately 2:46 a.m., Canmore RCMP stopped a green Chevrolet Astro Van for a Vehicle Equipment Regulation violation on the Trans-Canada Highway, West of the Town of Canmore. Police observed drug paraphernalia and detected an odour of marihuana in the vehicle. The driver and lone occupant of the van was arrested without incident for Possession of a Controlled Substance.
During a search of the vehicle Canmore RCMP located and seized approximately 13.5 pounds of Cannabis Marihuana and 2 pounds of Cannabis resin.
A 35 year old male from British Columbia was arrested and remains in police custody. Investigation continues.

Youth found dead at Maskwacis
On Saturday January 25th at 4:40 pm, Maskwacis RCMP along with Emergency Medical Services responded to a location on the Samson First Nation where the body of a deceased male was located.
The male was located in an open area approximately 1.5 kms South of Hwy. 611 East.
Police believe the deceased who was last seen on January 17th, 2014 in the Maskwacis area, and was reported missing to Maskwacis RCMP on January 24th. The male has been identified as 17 year old Travis RAIN of Maskwacis. The police investigation is continuing, and pending autopsy results, is not being considered suspicious at this time.
An autopsy scheduled for Monday January 27th has been postponed until Tuesday January 28th.

Grande Prairie ITU nabs drunk driver clocked at 154 km/hr
On Saturday January 25th, 2014, shortly before 5:00 p.m., a member of the Grande Prairie Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU) was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 2 North of Clairmont, when he observed a pickup traveling extremely fast, southbound on Highway 2.
The officer was able to obtain the vehicle's speed of 154 km/h in the posted maximum 100 km/h zone. The truck was stopped a short distance later and it was discovered that there were three male occupants inside the truck, all of whom were displaying signs of impairment by alcohol. The driver, a 23 year old male from Grande Prairie, Alberta, produced a class 5 - Graduated Driver's Licence which has conditions of "no alcohol".
The driver was arrested for impaired driving and later provided breath samples that were almost three times the legal limit. The driver was also charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The driver has had his driver's licence suspended pending the outcome of his court proceedings. The driver is now scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court at the end of February, 2014.
Speed and alcohol are both leading causes of serious injury and fatal collisions in Alberta. Apprehending impaired drivers is always one of the top priorities of the Integrated Traffic Units. Impaired driving is the leading cause of criminal death in Canada. Officers from all of the ITU's in the Province of Alberta are always searching out impaired drivers, day and night.
Motorists are encouraged to call 911 from a hands free phone if they suspect they are following an impaired driver.
Consort RCMP November / December 2013 Police Report
RCMP in Consort responded to 126 calls for service within Special Areas 4 during the Months of November and December, 2013.
On Saturday January 25th at 4:40 pm, Maskwacis RCMP along with Emergency Medical Services responded to a location on the Samson First Nation where the body of a deceased male was located.
The male was located in an open area approximately 1.5 kms South of Hwy. 611 East.

On January 22, 2014, at approximately 9:30 pm, the Smoky Lake RCMP, along with Vilna Fire Department and EMS, were dispatched to a rural residence in the County of Smoky Lake, near Goodfish Lake, Alberta.
Upon arrival emergency crews discovered that a 35 year old male had been assaulted at the residence and sustained life threatening injuries. The male was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton via STARS air ambulance, where he remains in critical condition.
On January 24 police arrested and charged 29 year old Emery CARDINAL of Goodfish Lake with aggravated assault. He is to be released on bail with a number of strict conditions. The victim's name is being withheld at this time.
RCMP are continuing to investigate the matter although no other suspects are being sought at this time.

RCMP Red Deer City reminds drivers when to report motor vehicle collisions
Winter driving makes motor vehicle collisions more likely, especially when the streets ice up as a result of melt-freeze cycles. Red Deer City RCMP would like to remind drivers when and how to report motor vehicle collisions, for the safety of all and for the efficient use of RCMP resources.
Do you need police at the scene of a motor vehicle collision?If there is a serious injury or fatality, call 911. If any involved vehicle is not drivable, or if any driver fails to produce registration or insurance, call the RCMP complaint line at 403-343-5575 (24 hours). If the vehicles are drivable and the above factors are not applicable, you don’t need police at the scene.
Do you need to report a collision to police after the fact?
You must make a police report after the collision if there is any injury, even a minor one, or if there appears to be $2000 or more in damage (if you aren’t sure, you can get an estimate first).
Exchange information with the other driver:
You need to exchange registration, insurance and drivers’ license information with the other driver(s). If you have a cell phone, it’s easiest to take photographs that information. Make sure to also take pictures of the damage to all involved vehicles and the collision location.
Report the collision in person
You will need to provide the registration, insurance and drivers’ license information you exchanged with the other driver, damage to involved vehicles and the collision location. You will need to fill out a collision report.
Reporting a Hit and Run
If you are the victim of a hit and run, report it to the police. If you see the other vehicle, record its make, model, and license plate number – partial license plates may be useful.
