The Southwest Rockies are still looking for their first win of 2014. They dropped two South Central Alberta Bantam AA Hockey League games on the weekend to extend their losing streak to six games.
The Rockies are on the road this weekend for games at Red Deer and Cochrane.
The Rockies failed to put more room between themselves and Brooks on Sunday as they dropped a 6-3 decision at Fort Macleod.
Michael McTighe opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the game, with Jessen Luco and Tyson Goodreau assisting.
Brooks got that one back four minutes later but McTighe got his second of the game with 5 1/2 minutes left in the period and the Rockies carried a 2-1 lead into the break.
The Rockies suffered a total collapse in the second period, allowing Brooks to score four unanswered goals to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
Jason Creighton scored early in the third period, assisted by Sawyer McAulay and Jason Stockton, but that was as close as the Rockies would come.
Brooks added an empty netter with three seconds to play to make the final 6-3.
Brooks fired 34 shots at Rockies goalie Sean Park, while the Rockies put 26 pucks on the Longhorns goal.
The Rockies returned to the ice Saturday night in Pincher Creek after a two-week break, looking for their first win of 2014.
The first period was a spirited affair with end-to-end action and several solid scoring chances for both teams.
Sylvan Lake opened the scoring with just under five minutes to play, then added a powerplay goal two minutes later to lead 2-0 going into the break.
The Lakers struck again a minute into the second period with their second powerplay goal, and got their fourth of the game just 15 seconds later.
The Rockies never had a chance to get back into it as they felt the wrath of the referee, who twice in the period gave Sylvan Lake two-man advantages.
The Rockies spent 16 minutes of the second period shorthanded, compared to Sylvan Lake’s six minutes.
One of those two-man advantages came when Rockies goalie Kyle Roberts retaliated after being run over by a Laker.
The referee didn’t penalize the Sylvan Lake player but ejected Roberts and gave the Rockies a five-minute major.
That perceived injustice seemed to ignite the Rockies, who killed off the major and had the best scoring chance.
Sean Park was pressed into action after Roberts was ejected and made two flashy glove saves right off the bat.
The Rockies won a small victory when they snapped Sylvan Lake’s shutout bid with 29 seconds left.
With time running out Jason Creighton drilled a hard shot that was stopped by the Sylvan Lake goalie. Rockies captain Turner Sharp, wearing Brad Park’s old No. 2, pinched in from the blue line and swatted the puck out of mid air into the goal.
The Rockies took a total of 27 minutes in penalties in the game to 10 for Sylvan Lake.
Sylvan Lake peppered the Rockies goal with 53 shots. The Rockies managed 35 shots on goal.
