Emergency Services responds to vehicle fire, tractor trailer in ditch

Vehicle set alight for warmth

Pincher Creek Emergency Services and local RCMP were called to a bizarre scene on Saturday morning December 28. A reported vehicle fire on Range Road 293-A approximately five kilometres south of Highway 3 between Pincher Creek and Brocket proved to be an unusual situation.

Two people in a Honda Civic apparently got lost overnight while travelling and then got stuck in a ditch. Although they had a cell phone it apparently would not work, probably due to a dead battery.  According to Deputy Fire Chief Pat Neumann they started a fire outside of the car to stay warm, fueling it with seats from the vehicle and personal belongings. Later they became more concerned for their safety, so to keep warm and attract attention they started a fire inside of the car. Close to dawn they realized they were near the driveway of a residence, and walked to the residence to call for help.

Pincher Creek Emergency Services responded with a fire engine and an ambulance, transporting both occupants of the vehicle to the Pincher Creek Hospital with possible injuries due to exposure to the cold weather.

Tractor trailer hits ditch on highway 505

A tractor trailer that was transporting liquids rolled over south of town on Highway 505 approximately 6 kilometres east of Highway 6 on Friday afternoon, January 3. Deputy Fire Chief Pat Neumann said that there was no leakage from the load, but it may take up to 24 hours to remove the vehicle from the ditch because the contents are to be pumped out before trying to right it.

Icy road conditions are believed to have played a large role in this incident.
