St. Michael's Junior A Dragons hosted Matthew Halton's Hawks on the evening of Thursday, December 12. Both teams are from Pincher Creek. The Hawks had an impressive lead early in the second quarter, ahead by a score of 5 - 13. The Dragons fought back hard to
edge forward but were still behind 12 - 17 by the half.
Both teams had good fast players, with Hawks Maia Jorgensen and Miranda Van Loon showing great teamwork and skills for this early in the season, and Dragons Olivia and Eileen sank a lot of baskets for their energized team.
In the third quarter the Dragons closed the gap, down by only one point for a time at 20 - 21. The Hawks took this seriously and worked to widen their lead again, holding the Dragons at 20 points for a while and gaining 6 points for themselves halfway through the quarter.
This was a fast paced, hard played game that was exciting to watch for the audience that filled the stands. It ended with several points being scored in the last 4 minutes of the game and ended in a 33- 26 win for the Hawks.
This was a very exciting game that promised an entertainingly competitive future for girls basketball in this community.
