At their first regular council meeting since the election, the first being an organizational meeting (click here for that story), Council for the MD of Pincher Creek voted unanimously to allow their meetings to be reported.
Spoilers: Here comes the Editorial bit.
An inquiry or inquiries to the previous council as to whether they allowed recordings of their meetings led to a council decision in October of 2011 to not allow recording, except under specific circumstances.
I don't believe everything has to have a record, but I do believe democracy is best served by transparency in our governments and accuracy in our press. Audio recordings serve both purposes. It means I can report truly and accurately with corroboration. It actually makes my job a safer one. It also means a misquote is entirely my fault. Life's like that.
So, thank you, current council, I believe you've made the right decision. You've made my job harder (transcribing is a chore), but I'll overlook that.
I'll have a more complete council report once I chase down some errant facts.

MD of Pincher Creek Council notes, December 13, 2011 meeting
MD to build a new administration building? Council voted unanimously on a motion by Reeve Zielinski to move forward in 2012 with a proposal for a new MD administration building, to be built adjacent to the MD Public Works yard in Pincher Creek.Update
Word is the move from the old office (which has a SOLD sign on it) will happen near the end of this month. I'm asking Santa for a big press table for Christmas. With wifi would be nice...

Another fun fact: the massacred people called it Spitzie Creek, not Pincher Creek. Don't go bothering Jim though, there's no trace of anything dramatic there at all anymore, although the wind has been known to blow.
Ask anyone with the name Dwyer (or Susan Aris) about the picture of the old house.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip!
DeleteI also applaud the decision to (re)open Council meetings to press reporting, which is a welcome change from the previous policy. Council should not fear scrutiny from the public they serve, and this decision suggests a willingness to share their deliberations with the citizens who are willing to pay attention.
ReplyDeleteWell, to be fair, they never banned or even contemplated banning press reporting, just the audio/video recording of meetings.
