2015 MHHS Experiential Learning Week wrap up

Creative baking project from Experiential Week
Toni Lucas - Pincher Creek's Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek tried something new and let students sign up for a course of interest in various fields,  taking one week of the semester for them to get to know that field in a hands on way from October 21 - 25. Some of the courses during the week included mechanical skills, photography, first aid certification, wildlife studies, outdoor survival, mechanics, creative baking, construction, and sports camp.

"We've had a lot of success stories, a lot of kids who are really finding their niche," said Principal Sandy McDuffe who was very happy with the experiential learning week project. "We have kids that are thoroughly enjoying this, and learning a ton about something that they may not have had an opportunity to learn about."

McDuffe was delighted with community support, and the staff and student enthusiasm for this project. According to McDuffe there are plans in the works to have another week in March. "We will again survey the kids to see where their interests lie, and align curriculum with their interests."

Outdoor Ed
Student Voice reporter Lloyd Lybbert was enrolled in Outdoor Ed for experiential week. "I really liked the fact that our teachers were so well experienced in outdoor survival and how they can express and teach us the skills," he said.  'In Outdoor Ed we were taught about orienteering, how to cook with a camp stove and a fire, certain aspects of surviving in the wilderness and fire building."

"Over all this course was one of the best that I could have picked because of the hands on aspect and the different scenarios that we were placed in. I think it went very well and I hope to see it happen for a long time," Lybbert concluded

Creative Baking

Creative Baking made a number of spooky Halloween themed cake houses that were up for silent auction in the school office.
