Stanley Stoklosa announces candidacy for Mayor

Stanley Stoklosa to run for mayor
Toni Lucas, Pincher Creek Voice

Stanley Stoklosa is running for Pincher Creek Mayor in the election that is to be held on October 23. Some of key points that he feels strongly about is more affordable housing,  the fuel used in the municipality which is tendered at an annual bidding process, and maximizing the local Pincher Creek Airport by holding aviation training sessions.

Stoklosa moved to Pincher Creek in 1996 from Claresholm, where he lived for 26 years.  He was a member of Town Council in Claresholm for 13 years, starting in 1972.  He said he would like to see a stronger rural representation at Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AMUA) and Canadian Federation of Municipalities (CFM) meetings.  He said that rural areas in Alberta can be overlooked by these two boards because there isn't the same level of population in rural areas compared to urban areas.  "I believe that I can be that voice, locally."

Other issues that Stoklosa sees as important are increasing tourism and re-visiting Roger Brooks' Destination Development Inc. report that was commissioned by the Town of Pincher Creek.  That report was released in 2007 and was the culmination of a two-year look at Pincher Creek from the viewpoint of a visitor.  It was critical of Pincher Creek's curb appeal. *

Stoklosa's civic credits include: Member of Town Council in Claresholm for 13 years, Chairman of the All Council Committee, Served two terms on AUMA, Appointed by Peter Lougheed to the Alberta Assessment Equalization Board, Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump Advisory Board member , Served 14 years on the Alberta Apprenticeship Board - Culinary Trades, and he was Chairman of the Airport Commission in Claresholm.

Stoklosa currently works at West Highlands Center in Lethbridge.

    STAN’S ELECTION PLATFORM POSITIONS

-Affordable housing for low income families
-Attempts must be made to secure investors to construct quality condos. (There have been inquiries from outside Pincher Creek as to the availability of this type of accommodation.)
-Upgrading of information signage for tourist and business travellers
-Action must be taken to attract new types of business in the vacant shops on Main Street in downtown Pincher Creek
-Enhanced snow removal in the winter months for downtown business and residential areas
-Call for annual tenders for municipal fuel and related products
-Enhanced use of the Pincher Creek Airport for aviation training sessions
-Take steps to increase tourism and revisit the beneficial highlights of the Roger Brooks Report commissioned by the town of Pincher Creek, and released in 2007, at a cost of $53 000.00. Improvement in Pincher Creek’s curb appeal is recommended.
-Lobby the provincial government for the twinning of Hwy#3.
-Lobby the federal government for a weather station
-Pincher Creek’s geographic location can enhance various tourist related activities and its proximity to Waterton Lakes National Park, Castle Mountain Ski Resort, Old Man Dam Recreation Area and various campsites throughout the area
-Promote Pincher Creek as a travel destination
