Happy Birthday to us! Pincher Creek Voice turns 2 today

Chris Davis
Chris Davis, Pincher Creek Voice

Two years ago today the Pincher Creek Voice was relaunched as a commercial enterprise with a story called "From The Pas to Pincher Creek's Fox Theatre: A Harry Potter Odyssey" by Toni Lucas.

For 20 months I was the only full-time employee, until Toni joined full-time in March of this year.  She did, as regular readers know, contribute greatly to our success working in a part-time capacity before that.

Toni Lucas
Over the course of the past two years we've seen our readership grow from 0 readers to a regular average of about 8000 "unique" readers a month.  Our regular average readership was sitting at about 1800 pageviews a day over the last 6 months or so until very recently, when several stories went viral and drastically changed that math.

A video I made of the Oldman River Dam during the recent southern Alberta flooding event has had 67,451 views on YouTube so far.  The story about that specific event has had 6799 views.  On the 5th of this month we broke the story about hail in the Taber area (thanks Kim!), and it is currently our top all-time story with 28,115 pageviews.  Not bad for a hyperlocal online news site serving an area of about 7000 people.

In the last 30 days we've had 115,889 pageviews, for an average of 3863 pageviews a day, 7 days a week from 41,889 "unique" visitors.

Toni and I are starting to suspect we're onto something here.

We can't expect that to happen every month, but it is gratifying to know we've found an audience.  It appears to be a regional audience as much as a local one.

Our revenue has also grown, and continues to grow.  That might just make us unique in the region, as most news providers are cutting back and making less and less with each quarter.

As a business, we've basically broken even over the last two years.   That was part of the plan.  Over the next 3 years we intend to improve our bottom line to ensure the continued success and growth of this enterprise.

I could go on and on about this stuff, and I probably will, but not in this editorial.

What I really want to say is this: Thank you, dear readers.  We are grateful for your support and hope and plan to continue to earn it.

Pop by our office in the Ranchland Mall on Friday this week, July 19, between the hours of 11:00 am and 4:00 pm.  There will be cake.

Thanks again.  Keep reading!

  1. Happy Birthday Pincher Creek Voice as two years at the end of the day will be the beginning of the third year of operation and how good does that feel. Well everyone pop open a bottle of bubbly whatever that bubbly entails(mine is A&W Root Beer) and raise a glass of cheer and goodwill to an online source of the peoples voice. Kudos Chris and Toni for making it through(or is it 2) the terrible two's(oops wrong child). Take care and all the best in the future as your readership expands to circle the globe(oh wait it already does. Cheers
