A ceremony in Grande Prairie kicked off Seniors’ Week, recognizing the important contributions of seniors in Alberta.
“As grandparents, volunteers, employers, and employees, seniors continue to be leaders in our communities,” said George VanderBurg, Associate Minister of Seniors. “Seniors’ Week is a great time to personally thank so many wonderful Albertans for their continued contributions to building a stronger province.”
This year’s theme is “Creative and Inspirational”, reflecting the spirit of seniors and the many roles they play in our lives.
In recognition of this years’ theme, Albertans who are 65 years and up will receive free admission to Alberta’s 18 provincial historic sites and museums during Seniors’ Week, June 3 - 9.
A highlight of Seniors’ Week is a special ceremony in Edmonton on Wednesday, June 5, to honour eight recipients of the Minister’s Seniors Service Awards. These awards celebrate individuals and organizations that make a difference in the lives of seniors. Eighty-eight nominations were received this year.
“Alberta’s prosperity and quality of life have been made possible by the contributions of our seniors,” said Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture. “Through sharing their love, support and wisdom, and above all by providing an inspiring example, Alberta’s seniors are an essential part of who we are.”
Many events are taking place across the province as part of Seniors’ Week, which are supported by the Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta, whose work focuses on raising awareness of the issues and concerns regarding seniors in our province.
