Weekend of collisions and fatalities on Alberta’s roads and highways

RCMP are asking drivers to slow down, watch for others and don’t drink and drive after a weekend of traffic collisions and fatalities on Alberta’s roads. Warmer weather means more vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians are travelling throughout the province.

From May 4th to the early morning on May 6th, RCMP responded to over 170 collisions which resulted in:
  • Thirty collisions involving an injury;
  • Two of those collisions resulted in three fatalities; and
  • Two pedestrians were killed in separate hit-and-run incidents.
RCMP urge motorists to exercise more care and caution on the roads as summer approaches.

“We want everyone travelling Alberta’s roads to arrive safely,” said Staff Sergeant Jamie Johnston, “K” Division Traffic Services, “That means slowing down, concentrating on the road, and not drinking and driving.”

Safety on the roads is everyone’s responsibility. The following are just a few safety reminders for everyone when travelling on Alberta’s roads and highways:
  • Obey posted speed limits;
  • Don’t drive distracted – put electronic devices away and concentrating on driving;
  • Wear seatbelts and ensuring children are safely buckled in an appropriate child restraint;
  • Don’t drink and drive; and
  • Be aware of others on the road – nicer weather means sharing with motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
