Live military bomb discovered near Barons

Yesterday, April 3, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. Picture Butte RCMP received a call from a rural resident of the County of Lethbridge, near Barons, Alberta. The caller advised he had located an old military bomb on his acreage buried in the ground and grass.


Picture Butte RCMP attended and confirmed the find. The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit were contacted and subsequently the Canadian Forces.

Military bomb personnel from Suffield Military Base near Medicine Hat attended and examined the device. They confirmed the device was a Live 11 1/2 lb Practice bomb from the 1940's. It was primarily used to drop from aircraft.

Military personnel retrieved the bomb and transported it to Suffield Military Base where it will be safely detonated.

RCMP are reminding the public that if you find a device that is suspicious in nature, or a military ordinance. Do not touch it, move to a safe distance and call police.
