Emergency Preparedness Week is a national awareness initiative that has taken place annually since 1996. It is a collaborative event undertaken by provincial and territorial emergency management organizations supporting activities at the local level, in concert with Public Safety Canada and partners.
EP Week encourages Canadians to take three simple steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies:
- Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help you better prepare.
- Make a plan – It will help you and your family know what to do.
- Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
Visit www.GetPrepared.ca for more resources to help you and your family prepare for all types of emergencies. Emergency Preparedness Week encourages Canadians to be prepared to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency while rescue workers help those in urgent need.
This year our agency will host its event on Friday, May 10th between 10 AM and 2 PM. Police Avenue between the Provincial Building and the 7-11 store will be closed with demonstrations from Emergency Services, Fire and Search and Rescue taking place. There will be displays by other emergency organizations. Come join us for music, fun activities, food and a chance to chat with the emergency responders regarding the importance of being prepared for an emergency.
Further details and tips on how to prepare for an emergency will be issued during Emergency Preparedness Week, May 5 to 11.
