Pincher Creek to Host the 2014 Southern Alberta Summer Games

Town of Pincher Creek press release

Pincher Creek is set to host the 45th Annual Southern Alberta Summer Games in 2014. The Town and MD will co-host this event that will showcase approximately 20 sports and attract around 2,000 athletes over the 4 days. As well as sports, there will be Ceremonies and Cultural Events so there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Games are an excellent way to develop leadership, promote community pride and showcase our community facilities.

This will be the fourth time that Pincher Creek has held the Games. Pincher Creek hosted the very first Southern Alberta Summer Games in 1970 and then again in 1985 and 2004. As in previous years, around 500 local volunteers will be required to stage the Games, assisting with everything from organizing, officiating, food services, entering results, first aid, setting up for ceremonies, presenting medals, promotions etc. Also there are opportunities to become involved as a sponsor or assist with fundraising.

An initial planning meeting for 2014 Games is scheduled for Wednesday March 6 at 7:00 pm in the Town Hall Council Chambers. If you are interested in becoming involved in some way please attend the meeting or call the Recreation Office at 403-627-4322 to register your name or receive more information.

The Southern Alberta Summer Games is a grassroots sporting event sponsored by the Southern Alberta Recreation Association (SARA). This is the longest running annual games program in Canada, if not North America. Generations of Southern Albertans have participated in or attended the Games over the years and even Gusty the Gopher, games mascot has had to update his wardrobe a few times to keep up with the changing eras.

The 2013 Games will be held in Taber from July 3rd -6th. Come on out to compete in the Games this year to show your support.
