New 511 service to replace current AMA Road Reports
Courtesy of Gateway Gazette
511 Alberta is a new service that will replace the current AMA Road Reports information system. This new system will launch on February 4th. The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) delivered this service in various formats since 1927.
511 Alberta – Alberta’s official road reports – will be available by phone and on the internet, with mobile friendly access to maps and text data. Timely updates include highway conditions, roadwork, major incidents, weather alerts and other information that will help Albertans and others who are planning trips or while travelling.
More than 80 Alberta Transportation cameras, located on highways across the province, will update images every 20 minutes and include real-time temperature readings.
The website also provides links to other sites with traveller information, such as the National Park Service, our neighbours (BC, Saskatchewan, Yukon and Northwest Territories as well as Montana) and the cities of Calgary and Edmonton. The weather link will take you to Environment Canada’s website.
The “511” part of the name refers to the 5-1-1 telephone number, which is used in many states, several Canadian provinces and one territory for traveller information, just like 9-1-1 is for emergencies and 4-1-1 for directory assistance.
The new website will be available on computers and mobile devices at 511.alberta.ca also on Twitter @511Alberta.
