Public assistance sought in Black Bear Poaching

Parks Canada Wardens and Alberta Fish and Wildlife Officers are seeking the public’s assistance to aid in the investigation of a poaching that occurred on approximately April 6 or April 7, 2012, along the Chief Mountain Highway.

During this incident, an unknown individual is believed to have discharged a firearm from within the national park, killing a black bear hibernating in its winter den on provincial land.

Individuals with any information are asked to call the ‘Report A Poacher’ line at 1 -800- 642-3800.

On behalf of all Canadians, Parks Canada protects the habitats, wildlife and ecosystem diversity within each national park. As a first priority, Parks Canada manages these special places to ensure that they remain healthy and whole. As wildlife regularly travel in and around Waterton Lakes National Park, Parks Canada works with Alberta Fish and Wildlife, local landowners and visitors to maintain healthy wildlife, in particular, wide-ranging carnivores such as bears, wolves and cougars.
