Man Presumed Drowned near Nanton

Update, April 12, 5:44 pm: Nanton RCMP with the assistance of the Calgary Fire Dept have located the body of an adult male in the water at the Chain Lakes Provincial Park near Nanton. The body will be transported to the medical examiner's office in Calgary to be positively identified. No names are being released at this time.

Just after midnight on April 12th, 2012, the RCMP in Nanton were advised of an overdue ice fisher near Nanton.  A 74 year old male from Calgary had left his residence early on April 11th for a day of ice fishing.  When he failed to return home as scheduled, family members went in search, and located his vehicle at the Chain Lakes area near Nanton.

Upon RCMP attendance, they were able to confirm footprints and sled marks leading out onto the frozen lake, and ending in an open hole in the ice.  It is presumed that the male went through the ice, and is deceased.  Calgary Fire Department has been contracted by the Medical Examiner's Office to recover the body.

The investigation into this tragic incident is still ongoing.  The RCMP would like to remind everyone that at this time of year, ice can be treacherous, with areas of thick ice interspersed with areas of thin ice creating potentially dangerous conditions for anyone traversing the ice.
