Pincher Creek's Pee Wee "A" Chinooks hosted long-time rivals the Crowsnest Pass Thunder at the MCC Arena on Sunday, March 25 for game two of a best-of-three contest for the Spud League championship.

The Thunder have had a special year, winning both Zone 5 and the Provincial Championship.  The Chinooks have had some struggles, but have also played a remarkable season.

The Thunder hosted the first game of the series the day before, Saturday, March 24, and defeated the Chinooks 8-2.  This the second game in the series turned out to be a much more evenly matched affair

Pincher Creek goalie #30 Matthew Duncan gets my vote for the top player in the first period.  His goaltending was solid, and he stopped an excess of shots before one finally got past him.  With only 1:22 left in the period Thunder #14 Connor Gunn scored an unassisted goal.

Penalties in the first and second periods cost the Chinooks some of their forward momentum.  Chinooks #7 Connor McLeod was given a game misconduct.  Thunder #16 Alex Ewing scored twice in the second period, assisted by #6 K's Thompson the first time and by #13 Tucker Evans the second time, bringing the score to 3-0 for the Thunder.  The Chinooks found some steam late in the period, and finally #11 Jesson Luco broke the drought for them with a goal at the 2:40 mark.  Chinooks  #17 Whyat Bruder got the assist on that one.

Luco came out strong and determined again in the third period, scoring early at the 18:51 mark, bringing the score to 3-2 for the Thunder, bringing the Chinooks back into contention.  This time #4 Tyson Goodreau and #2 Chaz Vance picked up assists.  For the first time in the game the Chinooks began to dominate offensively.  A goal by Chinooks Captain #9 Nic Jordan tied things up at the 13:09 mark tied things up. Jordan was assisted by Goodreau, Vance, and #25 Zack Krampe.  The Chinooks pulled into the lead shortly after that with a goal at the 13:49 mark by #19 Ethan Richards, assisted by Luco.

Unfortunately, that was it for the home team.   Thunder #13 Tucker Evans scored an unassisted goal, tying things up at 4-4, and then Thunder #20 Ty Anctil put them over the top again, assisted by Alex Ewen, with 8:46 in the game.  Despite a valiant struggle, the Chinooks didn't manage another goal.

Final score: Crowsnest Thunder 5, Pincher Creek Chinooks 4

The Thunder got to go home with the addition of the 2011/12 Spud League Pee Wee "A" Championship to add to their incredibly successful season.

With that, the hockey season ended in Pincher Creek.

Congratulations on a good season, Chinooks.  Next year!!!

Great coverage of the game! Brady Douglas was the goalie for CNP Thunder, not Sean Park.
