Sr. Girls Hawks edge Dragons in overtime basketball thriller

Matthew Halton High School's Senior Girls Hawks basketball team hosted Saint Michael's Dragons on Monday evening, February 6.  Fans were treated to a competitive, fast paced, and friendly competition.  The back and forth play was non-stop, with neither team holding an advantage for long.

The first quarter ended in and 18-18 tie.  The second quarter went to the Hawks by a narrow margin, 15-13. The Dragons were on fire in the third quarter, doubling up 16-8 against the Hawks.  The crowd was kept on the edge of their seats by the close game.  The Hawks had the edge in the last quarter, and when the regulation-play buzzer rang the score was tied 59-59, the Hawks having taken the last quarter 18-12.

The play in overtime was a repeat of what had gone on earlier, with both teams so evenly matched it was anyone's guess who might emerge victorious.  In a bit of a scoring showdown between Hawks' #14 Sydney Reidel and Dragons #5 Elise Wocknitz, one extra basket made all the difference.  To further underscore how close this contest really was, Wocknitz just about tied it up again at the end, with the buzzer going off a second before her ball found the basket. "When the buzzer went on the last basket I thought I was going to have a heart attack," said Hawks #7 Claire Johnson after the game.  Check out the video on that one!

The Hawks emerged victorious in a classic game, by a score of 69 - 67.

Hawks' #13 Laressa McGlynn and Dragons #5 Elise Wocknitz tied for top scorers in the game, with 20 points each. Hawks #14 Sydney Reidel was close behind with 19 points.  Dragons' #10 Amanda Higgenbotham scored 16 points.  Dragons' #11 Catherine DeCock and Hawks' #12 Dakota Van Loon each scored 14 points.
