On the evening of Friday, November 4 the Pincher Creek Mustangs football club held their annual awards ceremony, capping off a year of exciting firsts for the organization. An amazing smorgasbord was laid out, with the families of Mustangs players laying out enough food and then some to feed the large crowd gathered in the old Fields store at the Ranchland Mall. After dinner it was time to begin the ceremony. Faith Zachar, President of the Pincher Creek Football Boosters Association, opened the evening with a couple of presentations before surrendering the stage to the Pee Wee Mustangs coaches.

Pee Wee Head Coach Tom Holoboff handed out the hardware with the help of Assistant Coaches Travis and Stan, and helper Bryan Lissel.

"I would like to thank all the parents," said Coach Holoboff. "The coaches do all they can do, but you do volunteering and all of your support. Without you, we can't get done all that needs to get done." he enthused. "Thank you to all the parents that take time to get their kids to the practices, and the games." Holoboff explained his motivation, telling the crowd "I coach because of the 'Aha' moments. To see that light go off in someone's eyes, there is nothing like it."

Well sports fans, it was a bittersweet evening Friday, November 4 when the Pincher Creek Mustangs held their wind-up and awards Banquet. As always the Pot Luck supper was an excellent array of flavors, as there was something for every taste. The awards for the Peewee mustangs saw a number of deserving take awards but just as many deserving candidates walked away empty handed. All the players deserve the heart award as it takes a huge heart to take the field for a game, to give or receive that hit and the sacrifice to make the play knowing that you will take a hit doing so.

Coach Tom talked about the joy in seeing the aha moments when the young player gets what the coaches have been teaching and realizes the fun that come with knowledge of the game. The award winners were as follows:

Offensive Lineman - John Walker
Defensive Lineman - Jaeger Hann
Most Improved Player - Shay Robertson
Rookie of the Year - Hunter Austring
Defensive Back/Linebacker - Kiy-anne Courchesne
Running Back/Reciever - Tyler Riviere
Defensive Star - Brenden Lissel
Offensive Star - Jordan Hochstein
Team Spirit - Riley Sokownin
Heart - Thane Buckingham
MVP - Austin Bruder

Coach Tom acknowledged the last 3, Riley, Thane and Austin, as players that have been with him since he started coaching the Peewee Mustangs, and that the 3 were deserving of all three awards (team spirit, Heart and MVP), and that Coach will miss them next year when the Mustangs take the field. Coach Tom thanked Coach Stan Walker and Bryan Lissel for the thankless job of managing the bench during games. It was acknowledged from the crowd that managing the bench for peewee football is akin to herding cats. Coach Tom also thanked Coach Travis Liscombe for taking over the offense and implementing an offense that was the envy of every team we played.

Finally, thanks to all the parents for bringing the players to all the practises and games. Without the commitment of the parents there would be no Peewee Mustangs Football. Thank you to Mountain Radio, The Pincher Creek Echo and of course the Pincher Creek Voice for the wonderful coverage this year. I now would like to thank all you loyal sports fans for supporting the Peewee Mustangs and until next year, this is Coach Tom reminding all that everyday is a great day for football.

Talk to you soon with St. Mike's Junior High girls basketball reports.
