Matthew Halton High School hosted the Jr. A and B Girls Tournament this weekend. The Halton Showdown 2011 was a huge success, with over 15 teams coming from all across Southern Alberta.
In the A Girls tournament, teams from Fort Macleod (F.P. Walshe), Claresholm (WCCHS), Medicine Hat (St. Mary’s), Foremost, and Taber (WR Myers) played against our Halton girls. At the end of the round-robin, WR Myers came in first, followed by Foremost, and then St. Mary’s. FPW took fourth, with WCCHS and Halton in a close fifth and sixth.
In the Consolation side, Halton played WCCHS, losing a close game of 2 sets to 1. WCCHS then went on to play FPW. The game was close again, but in the end FPW pulled ahead, placing fourth in the tournament. In the semi-finals, Foremost played St. Mary’s, beating them in an easy 2-1 game, and then went on to play WR Myers in the final. A great match, the final went to two close sets, leaving WR Myers in first and Foremost taking silver.
10 teams showed up for the B Girls tournament, representing schools from the Crowsnest Pass, Taber (DA Ferguson 1 and 2), Barnwell, Medicine Hat (Crescent Heights), Fort Macleod (F.P. Walshe), Lomond, Raymond, and our own Halton. The girls were separated into two pools. The round-robin left Crescent Heights first in Pool A, followed by CNP, Barnwell, DA Ferguson 1, and then Halton in fifth. In Pool B, Raymond placed first, with WCCHS and FPW taking second and third. Lomond came in fourth, with DA Ferguson 2 in fifth.
In the consolation playoffs, FP Walshe played DA Ferguson 1, taking them in a close 2-0 game. Barnwell and Lomond went to three sets, with Barnwell winning the match 2-1. FPW and Barnwell met in the finals, where Barnwell won both sets to take the Consolation side.
In the championship playoffs, Crescent Heights played WCCHS, beating them in an easy 2-0 game and Raymond beat CNP in another easy match. The Championship Finals between Raymond and Crescent Heights was an exciting match, going to three sets. The final set was won by two points in a 17-15 victory for Crescent Heights.
The Halton Showdown was an action-packed two days, and the gym was steaming with the energy from the teams.

Matthew Halton High School Athletic Director Randy Whitehead was on hand throughout the tournament. He congratulated the top four teams and gave out plaques and prizes. As the major organizer for the event he was thrilled that it went so smoothly. "Altogether, there were 14 teams, plus two from Halton, making for a total of 16 teams," he said. He was proud of all the teams that competed, stating that "They all showed competitive excellence and tremendous spirit."
Medicine Hat's Crescent Height Vikings' coaches Jill Cleland and Shayla Paxmon could not have been more proud of their girls after their win. Cleland commented that "The girls played hard, all weekend. It was nice to have some time in the afternoon to enjoy the area, as well, we went to Lundbreck Falls."
Foremost Forettes coach Mandy Hougen was also tremendously proud of her girls. "We are a small school, with less than 200 students. It was great for the girls to come out and compete, and rank so high," she said.

It was a great experience for us, ans I would like to thank Matthew Halton High School for setting this up, and giving everyone the opportunity to play."
