Chris Davis - Matthew Halton's Senior Hawks placed second in Zones after a wide margin playoff win against Vulcan at home at Sproule Field on Tuesday May 24 against Vulcan's Hawks and an away Zones final loss against Taber on Monday May 30, resulting in Tier 3 Zones Silver for the Pincher Creek team. The Halton Hawks will be travelling to Lethbridge this weekend to compete in Provincials.

St. Michael's School needs your help to stuff a bus for Fort McMurray

St. Michael's grade 4/5 French Immersion class is asking for your help to stuff a bus with supplies for those affected by the Fort McMurray area wildfires.  They are hoping to gather enough items such as: Ziploc bags, garbage bags, brushes/combs, backpacks, all purpose cleaners, paper plates, plastic cutlery, toilet paper, bug spray, sunscreen, luggage bags, Band-Aids, Q-tips, Vaseline, razors, cotton balls, nail clippers, tweezers, shaving cream, tea, instant coffee, coffee creamer, sugar, rice, soya sauce, pancake mix, pancake syrup, salt/pepper/spices, canned foods, small bags of flour, almond milk, Nutella and cheese whiz, to stuff one Dragon bus.

Canoe Kayak Canada - Canoe Kayak Canada is pleased to name its team to compete at the ICF Canoe Slalom Junior and U23 World Championships in Krakow, Poland from July 13 to 17. The selections are based on results of team trials that took place in Kananaskis, AB this past weekend. Notable performances at the trials included Liam Smedley in U23 Men’s C1, Lois Betteridge in both the U23 Women’s C1 and K1, Florence Maheu in U23 Women’s C1 and Keenan Simpson in Junior Men’s K1.

Single vehicle rollover near Brocket sends one woman to hospital

Toni Lucas - On Thursday, May 26 a single vehicle rollover occurred approximately 5 kilometers south of Brocket on Highway 786 at approximately 1:30 am. The female driver lost control of her vehicle. She was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. She was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. According to Piikani RCMP Detachment Commander Ray Starzynski the accident is still under investigation, but alcohol was not a factor.

Alberta Government tables Modernized Municipal Government Act

The Modernized Municipal Government Act was tabled in the Alberta Legislature on Tuesday and Municipal Affairs will consult across the province this summer to ask Albertans for their feedback.

The last major review of the MGA was completed in 1995 and does not reflect new economic realities, changes in technology or evolving municipal roles and relationships. Municipalities are at the grassroots of creating stronger, more dynamic communities and they need robust, forward-looking legislation to meet the changing needs of Albertans.

Directors Mary Krizan and Sharon Halibert were very pleased with the performances of the students, who have been working on these two productions since February.

Justin Nelson, Chinook 4-H Multi-Club - We had a District fun day on May 13th.  It was a Nerf war at Canyon School. We set up tumble pads for cover and we played free-for-all, capture the flag and team death-match in the dark with strobe lights.  On May 14th we did highway cleanup.  It was cold, wet, but fun.  Some people even found cell phones after we went to Luigis for pop and pizza while having a meeting.

Josh Davis - The 47th annual Southern Alberta Summer Games (SASG) are taking place in Lethbridge from July 6 – 9. Athletes of all ages and skill levels will have the chance to compete in any of 21 different events, including running, basketball, soccer, archery, equestrian, handguns, cycling, golf, photography, and cribbage among others. Registration cost $20, and includes entry in up to three events. Team Pincher Creek T-Shirts, designed by Pincher Creek SASG Coordinator Kiera Greenly, can be purchased for an additional $15. To register, visit the Pincher Creek recreation office, which is adjacent to the pool, by close of business day Monday May 30.

All victims suffer

Joyce Sasse - For those who take notice, it is apparent that there is a great deal of suffering within Aboriginal communities. If you pay closer attention you may notice it goes back a long way.

Justice Murray Sinclair, speaking about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, points to beginnings that reach back seven generations. That’s when it became the policy of our Government to “tell Aboriginal children their lives were not as good as the non-Aboriginals of the country. Their languages and cultures were irrelevant … their people and their ancestors were heathens and pagans … uncivilized … they needed to give up that way of life and come to a different way of living.”

Cultural genocide such as this leaves a terrible swath of destruction and degradation. The suffering is almost unbearable.

It was a very special attraction for Heritage Acres, lots of fun, even in the rain, and it was a good fund-raiser too. Two years ago it went to the Agricultural Society, to our disappointment.

MD of Pincher Creek to donate $5000 to Fort McMurray wildfire relief

Josh Davis - During their Tuesday May 24 meeting.Council for the MD of Pincher Creek No. 9 decided to donate $5000 to Alberta Fire Appeal to assist with the efforts in Fort McMurray  “Mr. Reeve the administration has checked into donations going to the Fort (McMurray) disaster through Red Cross, and it’s our understanding that both the province and the Federal Government will match any donations,” said CAO Wendy Kay. “They consider us an individual donation. It’s any organization or person, they will match it.” The donation was prompted by an email to the MD from Acting Mayor of Vancouver Raymond Louie dated May 5, which was tabled for further discussion during Council’s May 10 meeting.

Josh Davis - On Tuesday, May 17, over 30 people attended the debut of the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society’s new photo book, celebrating 50 years of historical preservation. The authors for 'Tales of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village', Farley Wuth, and Gord Tolton and photographer Jessica Maunsell, signed copies of the book. Master of Ceremonies Bob Westrop auctioned off the first copy of the book, along with a lifetime Historical Society membership. Ray Degan won the auction with a bid of $700. James VanLeeuwen also paid his own high bid for a copy of the book.

Pincher Creek Town Council agrees to parades and proclamations

Council for the Town of Pincher Creek made a number of decisions during the the regular meeting on Tuesday, May 24 about various upcoming parade invitations, and proclamations.  Council accepted two parade invitations.  The first was for Granum Canada Day Parade on Friday July 1, which Councillor Lorne Jackson volunteered to attend.  The second was for the Bellcrest Days Parade on Saturday, June 18 which Councillor Wayne Elliott will attend.

Councillor Wayne Elliott informed council Prostate Cancer Day is Friday, June 17.  'Wear Plaid for Dad' is the theme and Elliott suggested councillors mark the day by wearing plaid to show their support.

Council recognized June is Recreation and Parks Month.  One of the programs Pincher Creek will be promoting is the Active Living Challenge where teams from businesses groups, or banded individuals will take up the challenge to live healthier lifestyles and chart their progress.  Council discussed forming their own team to show their dedication to the endeavour.

Chief Justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin to receive Honorary Doctorate from Laurentian University

Christian Davis - The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin is one of six distinguished Canadians who will receive an Honorary Doctorate on May 31 at Laurentian University's Spring 2016 Convocation ceremonies in Sudbury. McLachlin (nee Gietz) was born in Pincher Creek in 1943 and spent her formative years here.  Bev McLachlin Drive was renamed in her honour. She is the 17th and current Chief Justice of Canada, and in that role also chairs the Canadian Judicial Council, the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada and the Board of Governors of the National Judicial Institute. McLachlin is also the longest serving Chief Justice in Canadian history, appointed to the position January 7, 2000, and is the first woman to hold the position. Her judicial career began in April 1981 when she was appointed to the Vancouver County Court. She's been awarded with over 31 Honorary Degrees from various universities.

A public forum, organized by the 'Save the Waterton Field' initiative, was attended by a couple of hundred residents and visitors packing the conference room at the Lodge at Waterton Lakes, on Saturday, May 21st. The event was moderated by Dr. Nolen Olsen, with standing room only. Official representation from Parks Canada was conspicuously absent, as Superintendent Ifan Thomas declined to attend the Public forum, although he and many other Waterton Park officials had been invited two weeks prior and allotted time to speak when the forum was organized. CTV News and Global News reporters were in attendance from the media. Presentations began with 'Save the Waterton Field' coordinator, Bonnie Fromm, providing background information on the situation arising from a March 7, 2016 Parks Canada Press Release that had stated a new Visitor Reception Centre would be built in the townsite.

Pincher Creek's town council discusses Agricultural Society issues

Toni Lucas - On Tuesday evening Council for the Town of Pincher Creek discussed issues raised by a delegation from the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society. Society President Janet Watmough and Vice President Hilary Matheson appeared before council on May 9. Their concerns included leveling, drainage, fencing issues, and safety for riders due to changes on the grounds due to construction, and insufficient restoration after the installation of the new water intake system for the town. Council went through a number of their concerns.

Toni Lucas - A delegation from the Oldman Rose Society of Southern Alberta (ORSSA) appeared before Pincher Creek's Town Council on Tuesday evening, May 24.  Jan Frith acted as the ORSSA spokeswoman and was accompanied by Society President Kay Weir and Executive Board Member Donna Cisar.  The seven year lease which was granted to ORSSA by the Town of Pincher Creek for the area east of the Lebel Mansion, for their rose garden, comes up for renewal this year, and Frith asked if it is possible to sign another seven year lease.  She also said the volunteers for the rose garden project "Have been amazing."  Other items discussed were an upcoming brochure explaining the different roses in the beds, and deer that dine at the garden.

Dismantled Cowley Ridge windmill donated to Dawson Creek Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician program

According to the Dawson Creek Mirror News, one of the windmills dismantled at the decommissioned Cowley Ridge windfarm has been donated by TransAlta to the Northern Lights College (NLC) in Dawson Creek to be used as a simulator for students there. Click here to read the full story.

Town of Pincher Creek to donate $10,000 for Fort McMurray wildfire relief

Toni Lucas -  During the regular meeting of council for the Town of Pincher Creek council decided to donate $10,000 to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in response to the damage caused by the Fort McMurray area wildfires.  The idea was discussed during the previous council meeting held May 9, but council at that time wanted to ascertain if money sent through the Red Cross from the Town of Pincher Creek would be matched dollar for dollar.  Administration investigated and found that the matching of funds did not include large corporate donations and therefore would not be matched.

Experiential Learning Week 2016 at MHHS – Basketball and Volleyball

Josh Davis - As a part of Experiential Learning Week  at Matthew Halton High School on May 2 to May 6, athletically inclined students has the opportunity to take a course on volleyball and basketball. Coach Randy Whitehead, who taught the course from Monday to Thursday, said the kids were having a lot of fun. “They’re tired. We’re working them out, I think they’re ready for a nap. I’m ready for a nap.” Whitehead was absent on Friday, so Coach Wayne Alexander took over the course for the day. Students had to fill out a worksheet on technical and fouls on Friday, in order to earn their credits, and were also judged on participation.

Experiential Learning Week Spring 2016 – Horsemanship

Josh Davis - Matthew Halton High School held its 2016 experiential learning week from May 2 – May 6. One of the courses held throughout the week was a horsemanship, which took place at the Pincher Creek & District Agricultural Society’s Horseshoe Pavilion. Audrey Westrop helped teach both the beginner and intermediate horsemanship courses. Westrop provided horses for the beginner students inside. She taught intermediate students first couple of days, then taught the beginner students on Wednesday and Thursday. Westrop donated all of her time.

Experiential Learning Week Spring 2016 at MHHS – Crazy Cakes

Josh Davis - As a part of Matthew Halton’s Experiential Learning Week, which took place May 2 to May 6, students signed up for the Crazy Cakes course. Teacher Ian Robertson gave the Crazy Cakes students an order for a specialty cake, which they then had to fill to the specifications. Students had to figure out the costs of their cakes, and the profit margin they would make from their product.

While the majority of Albertans are responsible users of public lands, there are examples every year of inappropriate land stewardship. For example, carelessly driving all-terrain vehicles through the beds and shores of our waterways can destroy fish habitat and hinder fish spawning. Clearing trees and other vegetation from an area to create a new trail or camping spot also contributes to the deterioration of wildlife habitat. And abandoning vehicles, furniture or significant amounts of garbage ruins the landscape for people and animals alike.

65 years ago, when a handful of young girls in our tiny community wanted to form a C.G.I.T. (Canadian Girls in Training) group, Jessie Snow volunteered to be our leader. She was a bride from “The East” raising a family, managing a ranch and caring for aging parents.

Matthew Halton High School held a robotics course as part of its 2016 experiential learning week, held from May 2 to May 6. Students were given the opportunity to put together and program robots supplied by EZ Robot. The CEO of STEM Learning Lab Dennis Kombeitz supervised the students. On Friday the students demonstrated what tasks they had built and programmed their robots to perform.

Matthew Halton High School Teacher Jill Klapp was impressed with the fervor with which her Social Studies 30-1 students approached the task of taking on the United States Presidential Debates.  All 26 students were involved, in research, social media, debate or commentary.  During a 90 minute debate they had to answer questions on foreign policy, health care, planned parenthood, job creation, stimulus plans and illegal immigration, Syrian refugees, foreign policy with ISIS, and the ethical implications of  imposing liberal freedoms in non-liberal countries, "Like in Iraq, granting freedoms to women and children," explained Klapp in a recent interview.  "It was a big one.  They did well."

Working Groups selected for farm and ranch consultations

Agriculture and Forestry will begin the next phase of consultations with the farm and ranch sector on theEnhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act.

Members have been selected for the six working groups that will develop recommendations on how employment standards, occupational health and safety, and labour relations requirements should be applied - given the unique needs of employers and employees in the agriculture sector.

Between 2010 and 2014, 226 young drivers and motorcyclists (aged 14 to 24) were killed and 12,883 were injured in collisions. Although young drivers represented only 14 per cent of the province’s licensed drivers in 2014, they accounted for more than 20 per cent of the drivers involved in casualty collisions.

Pincher Creek Town Council hears from Shaw delegation

Josh Davis with additional noted from Toni Lucas - Lauren Nummi, Planner with Shaw Communications Inc. presented as a delegation to the Town of Pincher Creek Committee of the Whole on May 4, to discuss Shaw's plans for the area. The committee asked Shaw to work with them on a municipal access agreement Government & Regulatory Affairs Executive Officer Darren Cunningham was scheduled for this meeting but was unable to attend as a result of the wildfire in Fort McMurray. In his absence some of the committee's questions went unanswered. “I for one would like to see Shaw’s long term plan for our community,” said Town Councillor Doug Thornton.

Pincher's Hawks eye provincials after another big baseball win at home

Josh Davis - On Monday May 16 the Halton Hawks prep baseball team hosted the Highwood Mustangs at Sproule Field in Pincher Creek. The Hawks gained a four run lead in the second inning, and while the game remained tight they ultimately persevered, winning 7-4.

Province adjusts fire ban and OHV restrictions

Wetter and cooler weather in the southern part of the province has reduced the fire hazard, so the province is adjusting the boundaries of the fire ban and off-highway vehicle (OHV) restriction.  Effective immediately, the fire ban and OHV restrictions will no longer be in effect in portions of southern and southwestern Alberta (view map above).

It’s reassuring that the Saskatoon bushes and crab apple trees are in such resplendent bloom this year, following a dry mild winter and an even drier and warmer spring. The over-production of bloom is a reminder that, in spite of the threats those plants face, nature has a way of taking care of its own. The excess of seeds ready for another year insures there is enough for new beginnings.

U of L professor charged with sexual assault

Police have charged  37-year-old University of Lethbridge professor Nicholas Hanson with the sexual assault of a female student.

On November 19, 2015 a 23-year-old woman reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted by her professor in December 2014. An investigation was subsequently initiated and determined that on Dec. 13, 2014 the student attended an off-campus event where she became alone in a room with a professor and was subsequently sexually assaulted. The accused was known to the victim as he was one of her professors at the time.

According to a statement issued yesterday via Pincher Creek Emergency Services Deputy Chief Pat Neumann's official Twitter account @DeputyChiefPCES , the fire ban has been lifted for the MD of Pincher Creek, not including area in the forest boundary.  Fire pits and burn permits are available.

RCMP Pincher Creek

RCMP held an open house and BBQ at the Waterton Lakes National Park Detachment to mark the opening of the office for the 2016 season. Members from Pincher Creek and Waterton hosted the event that was well attended by visitors to the park, members of the community and employees from Parks Canada. Members in Red Serge gave tours of the historic RCMP detachment that was first opened in 1929. There will be four RCMP members posted in the Park from May to October.

Chief Mountain re-opens for the season, Wild Horse extending hours

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to announce that the Chief Mountain port of entry is re‑opening for the season, beginning Sunday, May 15, 2016. Additionally, the Wild Horse port of entry will be extending its hours for the season on May 15, 2016.

Pincher Creek Town Council hears concerns about drainage and leveling at agricultural grounds

Council for the Town of Pincher Creek met with a delegation from the Pincher Creek and District  Agricultural Society during council's regular meeting on Monday, May 9.  Society President Janet Watmough and Vice President Hilary Matheson voiced number of concerns, including leveling, drainage, fencing issues, and safety for riders due to changes on the grounds due to construction, and insufficient restoration. Matheson did most of the presentation saying, "We are here to discuss several issues that have cropped up in the last month, I would say."
