Peewee Chinooks win their home tournament

Pincher Creek's Peewee Chinooks hosted their first annual Skins Hockey Tournament December 11 to 13, and emerged in first place after defeating all contenders.

Participating teams included the Airdrie Night Owls, the Crowsnest Pass Thunder, and two teams from Medicine Hat - the Flames and the Winterhawks.

The Chinooks won most of their games by a wide margin. Their two games against the Thunder were close - in the preliminary games the Chinooks defeated the Thunder 7-5, and in the Final the Chinooks defeated the Thunder 7-3. The Thunder earned their second place finish, defeating everyone but the Chinooks to make it to the final.

Game for third

The Medicine Hat teams played against each other in the game for third. It was a fun game to watch, competitive and fast paced, with lots of back and forth, top-notch passing plays, and some stellar goaltending on both sides of the rink. The score was tied 2-2 at the end of the first period. The Winterhawks scored once in the second, and again in the third, with the Flames continuing to pour everything in to the competition. The Flames scored once in the third, the last goal of the game, bringing the score to 4-3 Winterhawks at the final buzzer. That earned the Winterhawks bronze medals for their efforts.

Final game for Gold

The final game of the tournament featured two regular rivals, Pincher Creek's Chinooks and the Crowsnest Pass Thunder. When these two teams meet it's always entertaining, and this game confirmed that. It was fast paced and competitive from start to finish. Chinooks #9 Cade Ames scored first, almost halfway through the first period, assisted by Kieran Randall and Rhett Fitzpatrick. Next was Chinooks #12 Alex Comeau, who knocked one in all the way from just south of the blue line, a brilliant shot, with assists going to Tristan Blood and Rhett Fitzpatrick. 2-0 Chinooks. The Chinooks continued to hammer the Thunder net, while demonstrating how well developed their passing game has become. With 1:50 left in the first that all paid off again, as Chinooks #6 Riley Potts put one in to make it 3-0. Alex Comeau and Kieran Randall picked up assists on that play.

The Chinooks began the second period where they left off in the first, hammering the Thunder net relentlessly, with the Chinooks' defence making the Thunder shoot wild every time they made it past the Chinooks blue line. Crowsnest goalie Cooper Snider gave a clinic between the posts, truly a bravura performance, but the odds were against him, and the Chinooks made it 4-0 with a goal by #8 Caleb Evans, who was assisted by Connor Stuckey. The Thunder could have given up at that point, but no go on that one. They continued to push back hard, and with 4:59 remaining in the second #21 Christopher Collings scored their first goal of the game, assisted by Carter Gudmundson and Libbey Wilmot. That was answered 25 seconds later by Cade Ames, scoring his second goal of the game for the Chinooks, assisted by Riley Potts and Connor Stuckey. Undaunted, the Thunder kept up the pressure, scoring one more goal with 2:20 remaining in the period, that one coming from #13 Carter Gudmundson, assisted by Christopher Collings. The score was 5-2 Chinooks at the end of the second.

The final period was intense, both teams doing their utmost to prevail. Caleb Evans scored his second goal of the game early in, assisted by Logan Deley and Cory Dyck, to make it 6-2 Chinooks. At the 16:48 mark Thunder #15 Austin Whelan scored, assisted by Cole Wemp and Tucker Gietz. The final goal of the game came from Riley Potts, who sliced through the Thunder defence with a focused determination to score his second goal of the game for the Chinooks at the 8:59 mark. Connor Stuckey picked up his third assist of the game on that play, and that's where it stood to the final buzzer. 7-3 and Gold for the Chinooks. A well-earned second place for the Thunder.

"Our kids played their best hockey of the year on the weekend. Both goalies played great all weekend, making great saves when we needed them. The defence played well and shut down the top scorers on the other teams, time after time. The three forward lines all played well and really moved the puck well. It was a great hockey weekend for the Peewee Chinooks!"
