Alberta High School Rodeo District 1 held a two day rodeo in Pincher Creek on Saturday and Sunday , September 12 and 13. The weather was sunny and warm on Saturday, with cloud cover on Sunday. The days were filled with high school aged contestants competing in the categories of Poles, Saddle Bronc, Breakaway, Tie Down Roping, Bull Riding, Team Roping, Goat Tying, Steer Wrestling, Barrel Racing, and Cutting.
The event is a chance to show your abilities in exercises that developed out of skills you may need at a ranch. There was an unofficial addition of Cowboy Polo to the Pincher event this year. These kids often travel with the rest of their family to these events. Often those family members will volunteer their time and efforts to make the rodeo a better experience. Family members were encouraged to join in after the to this bit of fun played with brooms and a soccer ball.
Many of the contestants chose to wear red on Saturday in support of Stettler's Jace Thorsteinson, who was seriously injured while practicing in August.
Cash prizes were given out each day to fourth place, the high point prize, and the all-around girl and boy. Jack Mitchell was awarded with the Altie Rutledge award, given to the local High Point Contestant each year in Altie’s memory. Click here for that story.

Some of the athletes were performing at the High School level for the first time, while others were seasoned veterans. The audience was encouraged to cheer even for those without the best times, since many achieved their personal bests, and all showed considerable skill in handling their animals.
