May is Huntington Disease (HD) Awareness Month, and a booth was set up for that purpose at the the Ranchland Mall on Thursday, May 7. Cas Main Freeman is a local woman who has been affected by the disease for 18 years, and she was on hand to visit. The people at the booth gave away awareness bracelets and had a draw for the book 'Inside the O'Briens', donated by the publisher. The winner of the book draw was Linde Farley. Farley is a volunteer for the Huntington Society of Canada.
Cas Freeman has been featured in two books that were on display - 'Huntington Disease Trials and Triumphs' by Meghan Andrews, a copy of which will be available to the public through the Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library, and 'Our Dances with Cas', which can be ordered from Janet Main at 403-627-2450.
Bev Everets, Marie Cameron, and others including Cas volunteered to answer questions and raise awareness about this inherited brain disorder. Cas still enjoys dancing in her wheelchair, riding her horse Blaze, and talking to people. Pincher Creek has one of 42 HD active areas or chapters across Canada.
