Ponoka attempted child abduction suspect sought

On December 4, 2014 at approximately 3:25 pm, RCMP were advised of an attempted child abduction. A 10 year old girl who was walking from school advised she was approached by an unknown male. The male asked the young girl to leave with him to go get candy, the male continued to approach this girl, who ran to a nearby business to seek help.

The suspect is described as:
  • a Caucasian male between 30 to 40 years of age,
  • 5'8" to 5'9" in height,
  • approximately 170 to 190 lbs,
  • had a brown moustache.
  • and was wearing a black winter coat along with a green toque. 
The Ponoka RCMP wish to remind parents to have regular discussions with their children about personal safety as well as safety in numbers.

ALERT recovers stolen guns in Red Deer

Three stolen firearms were recovered, and a Red Deer man has been arrested following an investigation by Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) and Red Deer and Blackfalds RCMP.

The stolen firearms were located following the execution of a search warrant on December 3 at a trailer on Burnt Lake in Red Deer County. A total of five firearms were seized from the residence, with two of the guns prohibited and three being previously reported as stolen.


The firearms included:
  • Walther semi-automatic handgun (prohibited, stolen)
  • ECHASA semi-automatic handgun (prohibited, stolen)
  • Ruger .22 calibre rifle (stolen)
  • Pistol grip Ithaca shotgun (prohibited)
  • Rossi .44 calibre rifle
David Twerdochlib, 38, was arrested after leaving the home in a stolen vehicle. He was also found in possession of crack cocaine, hydromorphone pills, and cash proceeds of crime. A search of the suspect’s trailer yielded a variety of stolen property, and the trailer itself was also found to be stolen.

Twerdochilb is being charged with a total of 30 criminal offences related to drugs, stolen property, weapons and firearms. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 10.

ALERT was established and is funded by the Alberta Government and is a compilation of the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources committed to tackling serious and organized crime. Nearly 400 municipal police, RCMP, and sheriffs work in ALERT.
Red Deer RCMP arrest 4 impaired drivers

On Friday, December 5, Red Deer RCMP took part in a National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day by operating two check stops in the city: as well as testing drivers for impairment by alcohol, Red Deer RCMP also use certified Drug Recognition Experts who are trained to identify and charge drivers impaired by street drugs, prescription drugs, or a combination of intoxicating substances. RCMP checked approximately 155 vehicles for impaired drivers and other traffic violations. 

As a result of these check stops, the following charges were laid:
  • 4 – impaired drivers arrested and charged (vehicles were seized for 3 days)
  • 1 – 72-hour suspension for blowing 50-100 mg%
  • 2 – 24 hr suspensions (drugs)
  • 1 – Prohibited Driver (Criminal Code charge)
  • 6 – vehicles seized
  • 1 – Proceeds of Crime (Criminal Code charge)
  • 2 – CDSA (Controlled Drug and Substances Act) charges (possession)
  • 9 – warrants executed
  • 1 – no insurance ($2,875 starting fine)
  • 19 – other violation tickets issued
RCMP conduct random check stops throughout the year and are always vigilant for impaired drivers, but during the holiday season those efforts become even more focused. The RCMP’s work to keep Red Deer streets safe is also aidedby numerous concerned citizens calling in to report suspected impaired drivers.

“Impaired driving, and the tragedies that accompany it, are completely preventable – it’s a crime, and we treat it as such,” saysCpl. Matt LaBelle of Red Deer RCMP. “If you drive impaired, your luck is going to run out and we will catch you.”

Report impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1 with a license plate, vehicle description and direction of travel.

Break in at Salvation Army in Fort McMurray

On December 9, just before 7 a.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP attended at a break and enter that occurred at the Salvation Army Church in the Thickwood Area. The break and enter occurred sometime during the night.

Staff of the Salvation Army have requested that anyone with donations to please attend the Salvation Army located on McDonald Avenue.

Mischief in Red Deer

Red Deer RCMP are looking for the public’s assistance to identify the drivers of two vehicles that caused significant damage to two sheds in the parking lot of Rona Home Centre, located at 7730 50 Avenue. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of December 2, when a blue truck and a red car were caught on video surveillance doing doughnuts in the parking lot. One of the vehicles hit two sheds, breaking a tail light and leaving debris in the parking lot. The vehicles then left the scene. Damage is estimated at almost $3,000.

Emergency Response Team safely arrests one man in Leduc

On the morning of Tuesday, December 9th, 2014 Leduc RCMP were conducting an investigation on the north end of Songhurst Wynd. While doing so an individual who was the subject of the investigation, began exhibiting concerning behavior and locked himself in his residence. Officers conducted a risk assessment and determined there was an elevated risk to public and police safety. Leduc RCMP requested the attendance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT).

The Emergency Response Team attended, and worked to resolve the situation. Shortly after 3:00 PM, the Emergency Response Team arrested a male who peacefully came out and surrendered. The male was transported to Leduc Detachment.

"We are thankful that everyone involved is safe and unhurt." Notes Cst. Julian Celms of the Leduc RCMP. "We recognize the residents in the immediate area had to adjust their plans for the day. We thank them for their patience."

Requesting the Emergency Response Team is standard operating procedure in events where an elevated concern for police and public safety exists. Their specialized skills provided an increased layer of safety, which in this case ultimately led to a peaceful and safe arrest.

The investigation is continuing and charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Grande Prairie thefts suspects charged

A judicially authorized search of a property north east of Beaverlodge has resulted in the recovery of stolen property. A male and female have been charged and remanded into custody.

On Thursday, December 4, 2015 Beaverlodge RCMP executed a judicially authorized search warrant on a property and residence in Valhalla Centre. As a result of the search, a stolen SUV was recovered along with a firearm.

Janice Tulokas of Valhalla Centre and Lance Bilsky of Grande Prairie have been charged with several offences including possession of stolen property over $5000. Both have been remanded into custody and will appear in Grande Prairie Court on December 10, 2014.

Death in west Edmonton deemed homicide

The Edmonton Police Service has confirmed the suspicious death over the weekend of Philip Mooney, 58, as the 23rd homicide of 2014.  The Edmonton Medical Examiner cannot release the cause of death until toxicology results are known.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate. No charges have been laid and police are not looking for any other suspects at this time.

The City of Edmonton had 24 homicides at this time in 2013.

Background

On Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014 at approximately 11 pm West Division patrol officers responded to a call for service regarding an intoxicated male at a residence in the area of 122 Avenue and 188 Street. Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive male. EMS treated and transported the male to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigations reveal that an altercation took place in the residence between the intoxicated male and another male who were known to each other. A male suspect was interviewed by police and released in the morning on Sunday, December 7, 2014.

WIN House scam in Edmonton

A 38-year-old woman is facing 30 charges in connection with an alleged fraudulent door-to-door solicitation of funds for an Edmonton women’s shelter.

Members of the EPS Specialized Traffic Apprehension Team recently responded to a suspicious person’s report in the area of 80 Avenue and 109 Street. Upon arrival, officers found a woman canvassing door to door throughout the neighbourhood, allegedly on behalf of WIN House women’s shelters.

The accused was found to be in possession of forged WIN House identification and donor receipt book, at that time.

Mia Christine Kuiken, 38: Facing Fraud Charges
Mia Christine Kuiken, 38, is facing 30 charges including fraud (x14), forgery (x12),proceeds of crime, possession of stolen property, obstruction and uttering a forged document.

Investigators also believe Kuiken may have been active canvassing neighbourhoods across the city for several months, and would like to speak with other residents who may have made a donation to the accused.
