Fatality MVC near Morinville

RCMP Morinville

On December 6th, 2014 at approximately 12:00 pm Morinville RCMP responded to a two vehicle collision involving a 5 ton grain truck and a pick up truck on Highway 44 just north of township road 564 in Sturgeon County, Alberta. The driver of the southbound 5 ton grain truck attempted to avoid the collision, but was unable to do so. As a result of the collision the driver of the northbound pick up truck suffered serious life threatening injuries. On December 7th, 2014 Morinville RCMP received an update that the driver of the northbound pick up truck had succumb to his injuries and passed away. Charges are not anticipated.

The deceased's name is not being released at this time.

 Alcohol, weather and road conditions do not appear to be factors in the collision.

Serious MVC on Hwy 22 near Didsbury

On december 6 at 4:10 pm the Didsbury RCMP, EMS and fire department responded to a motor vehicle collision west of Didsbury on Highway 22 at the junction of highway 579. A car travelling west bound on highway 579 was struck by a south bound sport utility vehicle as the car entered the intersection. The driver and the passenger of the car suffered serious injuries and were transported by STARs air ambulance to the hospital. The driver of the SUV was uninjured and his passenger was transported to the hospital by ambulance for minor injuries.

The highways at this intersection were closed until approximately 9:00 pm.

Names of all parties involved will not be released at this time.

Multiple MVCs near Innisfail and Penhold

The RCMP Innisfail Integrated Traffic Unit responded to Multiple collisions on Highway 2 and Hwy 2A near Innisfail and Penhold at approximately 11:30 this morning.

The RCMP have cleared up the multiple vehicle collision that occurred at the Penhold overpass on the QEII. 10 vehicles were involved in this incident. Several people were treated on scene by ambulance personnel for minor injuries and one person was taken to the hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. The highway was closed for a period of time, but is now open to traffic.

A second collision took place on the QEII at OPAL road near Antler Hill. which involved a stationary RCMP cruiser. A semi-tractor trailer lost control on ice and struck the police car causing significant damage to the police car. The RCMP member was not in the vehicle at the time and was not injured. The right lane is now open in this area and traffic is moving, although slowly. The highway will fully re-open shortly.

A third set of collisions took place on Highway 2A near Penhold. Traffic is now moving on this highway while vehicles are moved from the scene.

Police are urging motorists to slow down significantly on these stretches of highway as there are still icy patches making travel difficult. Rain over night combined with cold temperatures caused think ice to form on the road.

Charges laid in death of Lisa Michelle Mitchell

The Calgary Police Service has arrested one man in relation to the disappearance of Lisa Michelle MITCHELL. MITCHELL, 31, was last seen at her residence in the southeast community of Ogden on Monday, October 29, 2012.  After not hearing from her for an uncharacteristic amount of time, MITCHELL's family became very concerned and reported her missing to Turner Valley RCMP on November 17, 2012. On January 9, 2013 RCMP turned the missing person investigation over to the Calgary Police Service. On Friday, December 5, 2014 a search warrant was executed at the Ogden residence. This search is ongoing at this time. The Forensic Crime Scene Unit is processing the scene and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been notified. Allan SHYBACK, 38, of Calgary has been charged with second degree murder and indignity to a body. His next court appearance is on Monday, December 8, 2014.

Sylvan Lake man arrested after pursuit

A 31 year old Red Deer man is facing numerous charges stemming from an incident near Sylvan Lake Alberta.

On December 5, 2014 RCMP from Sylvan Lake responded to a complaint of a male who had just been caught by the complainant in the process of stealing the complainants snowmobile after committing a break and enter into the residence. During that altercation, the suspect pointed a hand gun at the home owner prior to fleeing in a vehicle.

The complainant followed the suspect at a distance and was able to direct responding members to the correct area to locate the suspect vehicle.

RCMP immediately responded to the location and learned that the suspects had fled in a vehicle travelling east on Rainy Creek Road toward Highway 20. RCMP members from both Rimbey and Blackfalds also responded to the area to assist. The vehicle was located by the RCMP in Bentley, Alberta, where two suspects fled from the vehicle on foot. Officers pursued the male suspects on foot in the town. Unfortunately, one of the male suspects was able to return to the vehicle and flee the location in the vehicle. A pursuit was initiated travelling East on Highway 12 out of the town limits of Bentley.

At one point in the pursuit, the suspect attempted to ram the lead police vehicle by backing up at a high rate of speed towards the police vehicle. Fortunately however, this tactic was unsuccessful. The pursuit continued East on Highway 12 where the suspect attempted to avoid a spike belt and ended up getting stuck in the deep snow in the ditch.

RCMP arrested Christopher Stephen WALES, 31 yrs old of Red Deer, Alberta without further incident.

Inside the vehicle, police located a small semi-automatic pistol within easy reach of the driver.

WALES faces a total of 24 Charges including:
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence
  • Theft over five thousand dollars X 2
  • Flight from Police
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Assault
  • Assault with a weapon X 2
  • Break and enter into a dwelling house
  • Possession of stolen Property over $5000
  • Possession of Stolen property under $5000 X 6
  • Breach of probation
  • possession of a controlled substance
  • and other firearms related offences
WALES has been remanded in custody and is set to make a first appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court on Tuesday, December 9 at 9:30 am.

Charges laid in Gregoire Lake First Nation death

On December 4, 2014,Cody WOODWARD (32) was identified and arrested as the accused responsible for the death of the male located on Gregoire Lake Reserve on November 30. He has been charged with one count of murder and has been remanded in custody where he is scheduled to appear December 8, 2014.

Residential B&E in Mannville

RCMP Vermilion

On December 6, 2014 at approximately 4:00 PM the Vermilion RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter in progress in the village of Mannville. The resident of the home remained undetected by the intruder and alerted a family member via text that an unknown male had broken into the house, and to call the police. As the intruder was attempting to steal a TV, the resident yelled out which scared him off. The suspect in this break and enter may have been carrying a rifle.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male wearing a balaclava to conceal his face.

Big drug bust on Hwy 16

On December 6, 2014 at approximately 10:16 PM, traffic services were conducting impaired driving enforcement on Highway 16 in Edson Alberta. An east bound vehicle was stopped for a traffic infraction, and the driver was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant from Edmonton. The driver was a 55 year old man from Surrey British Columbia, and was known to police. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of a large quantity of various drugs. Seized by police was 9.5 lbs of marihuana, 1/4 lbs of mushrooms, 2 oz of cocaine and 1/2 an oz of Crystal Methamphetamine.

Rede Hely CHASE has been charged with four counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. He has been remanded in custody to appear for a bail hearing in Edmonton Provincial Court on Tuesday.

CHASE was out on bail from his arrest on January 17, 2014, for being caught in possession of 10.5 pounds of marihuana. This investigation was conducted by Edson Traffic Services.

Thefts from vehicles in St. Albert

The St. Albert RCMP is seeking information from the public regarding the entry to 2 vehicles that occurred on December 7th, 2014. The first theft occurred at approximately 6 PM in the area of Perron Street and St-Thomas Street . A female returned to her parked vehicle to find the driver's side window smashed and her purse missing. The second theft took place at approximately 8 PM in the parking lot of Servus Place. Unknown individual(s) smashed the window of a pick-up truck and left with a purse and 2 Ipods.

The Police would like to remind everyone to please remove all valuables from their vehicles even if they are left unattended for a short period of time.

Truck thief nabbed

RCMP Sylvan Lake

On December 6, 2014 at approximately 11:00 am, as Sylvan Lake RCMP were setting up for the Annual Charity Check-stop, a call for service came in to police. The caller reported that their Chev truck had just been stolen by an unknown male. The truck had been left idling in the driveway and unlocked at the time. Police responded immediately to learn that the suspect got the stolen truck stuck in a nearby alley in Hewlett Park and subsequently fled on foot. The suspect was chased at first by witnesses, then by responding members. He was cornered in a residential area nearby and taken into custody with no further incidents. Subsequent to arrest, police located a set of keys which were later confirmed to belong to another stolen vehicle which has now been recovered by Blackfalds RCMP. The man was found to have 2 outstanding warrants for his arrest as well.

Kevin GALLAGHER, 30 years old, of Red Deer, Alberta has been charged with the following offences:
  • Theft of a Truck
  • Possession of Stolen Property
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Fail to comply with a Probation Order X 2
GALLAGHER will appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on Tuesday, December 9th, 2014 to face these charges.

Drug seizures and charges in Grande Prairie

Search warrants at two residences last Thursday have resulted in the seizure of cash, stolen property and illegal drugs. Numerous people from Grande Prairie are facing a variety of charges.

On Thursday, December 4, 2014 Grande Prairie RCMP conducted a judicially authorized search of a residence at the Ranchlands Apartment Buildings on 82 Avenue. This resulted in the seizure of an undisclosed amount of cash, approximately 2530 pills suspected to be fentanyl, 384 grams of cocaine, 6.7 grams of methamphetamine and 11.3 grams of MDMA.

Ayana ALISHO (24), Ahmed ALISHO (52) and Mahdi MOHAMMED (40), all of Grande Prairie have each been charged with 4 counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and 1 count of proceeds of crime over $5000. They have each been released on $8000 cash bail and are scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on January 19, 2015.

Also last Thursday, Grande Prairie RCMP executed a judicially authorized search warrant was executed on a residence at 9716 100 Avenue. This resulted in the seizure of cash, 21 grams of cocaine, 80 mL of GHB (date rape drug), 7 fentanyl pills, 15 unknown pills and a stolen purse.

Rae-Lynn AUGUST (25) of Grande Prairie has been charged with 2 counts of a possession of a controlled substance, 1 count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, 1 count of proceeds of crime under $5000 and 3 counts of failing to abide by an undertaking. She was released on $1500 cash and is due in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on January 5, 2015.

Wayne SCHWARTZ was charged with 3 counts of possession of a controlled substance and 1 count possession of stolen property. He was released on $750 cash and is due in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on January 5, 2015.

Tanya BALDWIN was charged with 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance and 1 count of possession of stolen property. She was released on a no-cash recognizance and is scheduled to be in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on January 5, 2015.

Grande Prairie check stops result in numerous charges

As a result of Grande Prairie's involvement in the RCMP national initiative to crack down on impaired drivers a number of impaired drivers were taken off the road this past Friday night.

On the evening of Friday, December 5, 2014 a contingent of RCMP officers braved the elements and conducted a Check Stop Operation in the downtown area of the city. This was part of a larger national RCMP initiative that has been going on throughout the year. The following is a summary of the enforcement that was conducted as a result of this check stop:
  • 6 impaired drivers charged
  • 2 GDL 30 day suspensions.
  • 2 72 hours suspensions
  • 1 24 hrs suspension for drug use
  • 1 CDSA possession charge
  • 1 suspended driver.
  • 1 no insurance ticket
  • 1 no registration ticket
  • 5 other related tickets.
  • 1 vehicle seized and judicially authorized search warrant completed. A significant amount of cash proceeds of crime, 1 ounce of powdered suspected CDSA and a loaded 45. cal hand gun were seized as a result. 
Grande Prairie RCMP are doing their part to make City streets, roads and highways safer for everyone who use them.
