Provincial travel advisory issued

RCMP advise highways are in very poor driving condition across the province. The QEII is very slippery and there are multiple collisions on going between Edmonton and Calgary. Highways to the north of Edmonton have snow accumulation and blowing snow which has caused poor visibility in some areas.

Highways south of Edmonton are in poor driving condition and there are several vehicles that have slid off the road. Please use caution and be aware of emergency vehicles.

RCMP Commanding Officer, Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan has recommended you do not travel unless it is necessary. If you have to travel please ensure you are prepared with proper emergency clothing and equipment.

Please refer to the 511 road reports before travelling and for further updates.

Original release November 27, 1:55 pm:

An Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol Officer, a member of the QEII Integrated Traffic Unit, was checking on vehicle occupants at a collision scene when the officer was struck and injured by an out of control semi truck. The officer has been taken to hospital by ambulance.

A tanker truck involved in another secondary collision has also rolled and is now leaking fuel.

Highway #2 is currently closed in the south bound lanes at Highway #12 at Lacombe.

Winter driving conditions in Banff area

Lake Louise RCMP are advising the public to be mindful of the winter driving conditions on the Trans Canada, through the mountains. As Environment Canada still has a heavy snow fall warning for the Banff National Park area, plows are busy clearing snow and are sometimes working in tandem. Do not pass while this is happening as there are plow extensions on the ground coming out from the plows that are hard to see, but assist the plows to clear more of the road more quickly. The RCMP are also requesting the motoring public to slow down and give more room for stopping.

The Trans Canada is temporary closed (as of 8:00 this morning) between Golden and Revelstoke in
both directions due to a collision. It is unknown when the road will open but drivers are asked to check drivebc.ca for update.

Red Deer RCMP remind drivers to slow down

As the snow falls, Red Deer RCMP remind Red Deerians to use caution when traveling city streets:
  • Remember, while four-wheel drive may offer better traction when you start out, it doesn’t provide any extra traction when you put on the brakes.
  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly, and drive slowly – starting, turning and braking all take longer on snow-covered roads.
  • Leave extra room between your vehicle and other vehicles – give yourself space to stop safely.
  • Check road and weather conditions before you start out, and give yourself extra time to get to your destination.
  • Remove all snow from your vehicle so that you can see 360 degrees around it.
  • Ensure all headlights and taillights are working properly.
  • Use headlights, even during daylight hours, to increase visibility.
  • If needed, add weight to the trunk or box of your vehicle with sand bags.
  • Check tires for wear and replace with either snow or good all-season tires.
RCMP see a dramatic increase in collisions when road and weather conditions deteriorate. By implementing some basic vehicle maintenance and traffic safety awareness, you can do your part to avoid and reduce collisions on city streets this winter.

When approaching the scene of a collision, proceed with extreme caution.  SLOW DOWN when passing Emergency Services personnel and give them room to work. Everybody deserves to return home safely.

Do you need police at the scene of a motor vehicle collision?

If there is a serious injury or fatality, call 911. If any involved vehicle is not drivable, or if any driver fails to produce registration or insurance, in Red Deer call the RCMP complaint line at 403-343-5575 (24 hours). If the vehicles are drivable and the above factors are not applicable, you don’t need police at the scene.

Do you need to report a collision to police after the fact?

You must make a police report after the collision if there is any injury, even a minor one, or if there appears to be $2000 or more in damage (if you aren’t sure, you can get an estimate first).

Exchange information with the other driver:

You need to exchange registration, insurance and drivers’ license information with the other driver(s). If you have a cell phone, it’s easiest to take photographs that information. Make sure to also take pictures of the damage to all involved vehicles and the collision location.

Report the collision in person at the downtown (4602 51 Avenue) or north (6592 58 Avenue) detachments:

You will need to provide the registration, insurance and drivers’ license information you exchanged with the other driver, damage to involved vehicles and the collision location. You will need to fill out a collision report.

Reporting a Hit and Run

If you are the victim of a hit and run, report it to the police. If you see the other vehicle, record its make, model, and license plate number – partial license plates may be useful.

For more information visit www.reddeer.ca/rcmp. Red Deer RCMP would like to thank drivers for using the Complaint Line and emergency 911 numbers responsibly.
