Vehicle B&Es in Cochrane
Cochrane RCMP
During the last 6 months Cochrane RCMP have had a significant increase in vehicle break and enters in the residential areas of Cochrane and the surrounding communities.
Unlocked vehicles parked in residential areas appear to be the highest targets, with night time being the preferred time of day. Entry into unlocked vehicles parked on streets and driveways seem to be the most favoured method for suspects to gain entry and steal items from these vehicles. In some instances, vehicles were entered through an unlocked door and once inside the vehicle, thieves will look for garage door openers in the vehicle and use those to gain entry into the garage of a residence, and in a few cases entry into the residence through an unlocked door leading from the garage to the interior of the residence.
Members of the general public are reminded to be aware of suspicious activity taking place in their neighbourhoods and to report any suspicious activity to police. The following tips can help reduce the chances of being a victim of this crime:
1. Ensure vehicles are locked and secure when parked in public areas,
2. Remove all valuable items from the vehicle or keep items out of plain view,
3. Keep garage door fobs locked in a secure compartment of the vehicle,
4. Do not leave anything with your address on it within plain view in your vehicle,
5. Park in well lit areas, or consider using exterior residential lights or motion sensors to illuminate vehicle driveways,
6. Be aware of any suspicious vehicles/persons or activity in your neighbourhood, and
7. Report suspicious activity to police immediately.
The public is also encouraged to get involved in with your local Citizens on Patrol. If you notice any suspicious activity in your community report it to your local police or to Crimestoppers.

High River Charity Checkstop planned
High River RCMP
This year High River Emergency Services, along with Victim Services, will hold the second annual Charity Check Stop. On December 3, 2014 from 2pm to 4pm members will be conducting a “check stop” on Center Street to accept donations. This year we have chosen the Rowan House (an emergency shelter) and the High River Food Bank to be the recipients of the donations. The Rowan House and the Food Bank provide a vital service to those less fortunate in our community and help brighten many people’s lives. We in Emergency Services and Victim Services typically only get to deal with people when there is a negative event, but the Charity Check stop allows us to have a positive interaction with many people and also help many people.
These donations will be used for the sole purpose and benefit of the residents of High River and surrounding community. No donations will be awarded to anyone other than the Rowan House or Food Bank. Our goal is to raise awareness and donations for those in need during this holiday season.
The High River RCMP is also challenging the Okotoks Detachment to a friendly competition over this event.
Edmonton's African community invited to meet with police
Edmonton Police Service
The African Community Liaison Committee (ACLC) is hosting a town hall meeting for Edmontonians of African heritage and members of the Edmonton Police Service to discuss policing concerns and highlight opportunities to work together.
At the meeting, staff will also be on hand to provide information about police resources, careers in policing, as well as services available through the City of Edmonton. Everyone is welcome to attend.
“We’ve seen some very positive results when we’ve acted as a bridge between police and the community,” says Jidiri Ndagije, Co-Chair of the ACLC. “It’s as simple as starting a conversation – because we all share the common belief that communication builds understanding, understanding builds trust, and trust builds relationships.”
The EPS African Community Liaison Committee was constituted as part of the Chief’s Community Advisory Council in May 2010, and held its first community outreach meeting in March 2012.
The Community Advisory Council was created to help provide Edmonton’s multicultural and diverse communities with opportunities for dialogue, awareness and partnership in community policing – with the goal of addressing community safety issues and improving quality of life.
“For community policing to be successful, people need to trust police, and go to the police when they need assistance,” says Supt. Terry Rocchio with EPS Northeast Division and ACLC Co-Chair. “As police, we need to build that trust, not only by upholding the law, but by demonstrating our values and professionalism in everything we do. We have a unique opportunity through the ACLC to work together with the local African community and build that trust.”
