Multiple fatality MVC in Leduc area

Leduc RCMP

On November 22, 2014 at approximately 10:52 am Leduc RCMP were called to a head on motor vehicle collision on Highway 21 between Airport Road and Highway 625. The collision involved a Saturn Ion, which had been traveling Northbound on Highway 21 and a Tractor Trailer which had been traveling Southbound on Highway 21. The investigation has determined that the Saturn lost control of the vehicle after hitting a icy patch on the road and slid into on coming traffic, colliding with the tractor trailer. The four occupants of the Saturn died on impact with the tractor trailer.

RCMP believe that the road conditions at the time of the collision were a contributing factor to this fatal motor vehicle collision.

The driver and lone occupant of the tractor trailer was not injured in this motor vehicle collision.

The names of the deceased are not being released pending next of kin notification.

RCMP advise that Highway 21 between Airport Road and Highway 62 has reopened.

No further information is being released at this time.

NOVEMBER 22, 2014:

Lac La Biche RCMP urge motorists to stay off highways Updated Nov. 23

Lac La Biche RCMP update
November 22, 2014 at 3:15pm

RCMP are continuing to urge motorists to stay off local highways as road conditions are in a treacherous state for most of the area.

The following highways are in EXTREMELY POOR CONDITION and a NO TRAVEL ADVISORY is in effect:
  • Highway 881;
  • Highway 36;
  • Highway 55;
  • Highway 858;
  • Highway 663.
**Highway 881 is currently closed at KM Marker 162 - Not expected to re-open until late this evening**

Presently a heavy snow fall warning remains in effect for the area and since the early morning hours the area has received a significant amount of snowfall. This snow has caused roads to be covered, reduced visibility and also started to cause the formation of black ice. Some sections of roadway appear to be partly clear but have a thin layer of black ice on the driving lane. Blowing snow has also been reported and it is currently reducing visibility. The conditions and NO TRAVEL ADVISORY are expected to remain in effect until late tonight.

RCMP have been attending a staggering amount of collisions since the evening of Thursday November 20, 2014, including three fatal collisions.

RCMP are continuing to ask the public and commercial vehicles to remain off of the highways. By travelling on roads motorists are taking an unnecessary risk to their personal safety as well as the safety of the public. Local Police, Fire and EMS crews have been responding to multiple collisions and are also having their safety put into jeopardy to assist motorists who have decided to travel.

Background information on Fatal Collisions:

1. On Thursday November 20, 2014 at approximately 11:00pm RCMP, Fire and EMS were called to a two vehicle collision on Highway 881 approximately 20 kilometres north of Lac La Biche.

A pick up truck travelling southbound on Highway 881 struck the rear end of a log truck that was stopped in the driving lane and unable to get traction due to extreme road conditions. Inside the pick up truck were two male occupants. The passenger, a 21 year old male from the Lac La Biche area succumbed to his injuries on scene. The 25 year old male driver of the vehicle was transported to local hospital and then airlifted to Edmonton in serious condition. The driver of the log truck was not injured as a result of the collision.

Police continue to investigate this collision and have attributed road conditions and speed as factors. Alcohol is also a possible factor in the cause of the collision.

The section of Highway was re-opened at approximately 3:30am.

2. On Friday November 21, 2014 at 11:45pm RCMP, Fire and EMS were called to a two vehicle collision on Highway 36 approximately 45 kilometres south of Lac La Biche near Kikino, AB.

A pick up truck travelling southbound and a car travelling northbound collided head on. Three occupants in the pick up truck escaped from the vehicle as it started on fire. The 38 year old male driver of the car, who is from the Lac La Biche area succumbed to his injuries on scene. The 25 year old male driver and two passengers a 20 year old male and a 23 year old female were all transported to hospital. The 20 year old male passenger has since been airlifted to Edmonton as a result of his injuries.

Police continue to investigate the collision and believe that alcohol is a contributing factor.

The Section of Highway was re-opened at approximately 5:00am.

3. On November 22, 2014 at approximately 10:30am RCMP, Fire and EMS were called to a three vehicle collision on Highway 881 approximately 140 kilometres north of Lac La Biche.

Phone scammer impersonating police

Red Deer RCMP received a report today of a scammer claiming to be with the local RCMP in order to gain her intended victim’s credit card information. A Red Deer woman received a phone call this morning from a woman who claimed to be a constable with the Red Deer RCMP; the scammer further claimed to have found the woman’s wallet, and asked for credit card information in order to verify that the wallet would be reunited with its rightful owner. The scammer had some personal information about their intended victim.

“The intended victim, who had not lost her wallet, asked for the caller’s badge number,” says Corporal Leanne Molzahn of the Red Deer RCMP. “She then called the RCMP to check on the story and confirmed that it was a scam.”

Molzahn would like to remind the public that RCMP will never ask for a person’s credit card information over the phone. Anyone who receives suspicious calls should always do as the intended victim did, and independently check to verify whether the story they’re being told is legitimate or not.

RCMP continue to investigate this incident of fraud and personating a police officer. The female scammer is believed to be local and may be assisted by a male accomplice.

Grande Prairie drug bust nets cocaine, cash, cars

ALERT

Four people were arrested and Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) has shut down a drug trafficking cell that was operating in the Grande Prairie area.

ALERT’s Grande Prairie team seized four vehicles and more than $30,000 in cash proceeds of crime from the suspected drug trafficking group. The assets will be forfeited to Alberta’s Civil Forfeiture Office, money which is then used to help support victims of crime and community policing initiatives. “We are hitting drug dealers in their pocketbooks as means of crippling their criminal operations, and the province’s civil forfeiture legislation has proven an effective tool in doing so,” said Sgt. Jason Gibson.

The group is accused of actively dealing drugs throughout Grande Prairie and surrounding areas. ALERT seized nearly $9,000 worth of cocaine and heroin in the investigation. The cocaine was broken up into “spitballs” for street-level sale.

The drugs and cash were seized as the result of search warrants executed on November 13, with assistance from Grande Prairie and Beaverlodge RCMP. Four vehicles were searched along with a home in Wembley, Alta. The investigation was initiated in early September.
Seven drug-related charges have been laid. Four people were arrested including:
Kyler Schwartz, 20, of Wembley;

On Monday, June 30, 2014, Cochrane RCMP received a phone call from a citizen who located what appeared to be human remains on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation near Morley. Following an autopsy, the remains were identified as those of GIAMA. A cause of death is yet to be determined but it is believed he died as a result of an altercation.

On Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, Kevin Douglas DALTON, 35, was arrested at an address in southeast Calgary without incident. He has been charged with manslaughter and committing an indignity to a human body.

It is believed the victim and the accused were known to one another. To protect the integrity of the investigation, the nature of the relationship and the potential motive are not being released at this time.

Investigators are not looking for any further suspects.

Grandparent Scam still working

The Calgary Police Service is warning citizens about a scam that has appeared to have escalated in the past few months.  During 2014, police have become aware of 86 cases relating to what is often referred to as the Grandparent Scam.  In each case, con artists have been contacting potential victims over the phone, posing as a family member or friend in urgent need of cash.

Often the scenario involves an accident or arrest while travelling, with a request that cash be sent through a money transfer company, such as Western Union or Money Gram or by purchasing prepaid credit or gift cards.

Better Business Bureau Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay President and CEO, Sandra Crozier-McKee says, “Typically we’ve seen scammers asking for wire transfers, but now we’re starting to see scammers getting people to purchase grocery gift cards as a way of obtaining personal financial information. This is a new twist on an old scam that we want people to be aware of.”

In the typical scenario, a grandparent receives a phone call from a con artist claiming to be one of his or her grandchildren.

The caller goes on to say they are in some kind of trouble – such as being in a car accident, needing bail money or money to cover vehicle damages. The emphasis is on needing money and immediately.

In the majority of cases, a second suspect makes a follow-up call to the victim claiming to be a lawyer representing their relative and provides the details of how the transaction should be made.

Victims are convinced by the callers, and rushed into sending money because of an “emergency” only to find out afterwards they had been defrauded.

The caller specifically asks that their request be kept secret from other relatives, as they are embarrassed for calling, and do not want anyone else to know what has happened.

Between August and November of this year, there have been a total of 45 cases amounting to approximately $74,000 being stolen. Fortunately in many cases the money transfers were cancelled, otherwise this number would have been much larger.

However, in one case alone, the suspects were successful in conning someone out of nearly $15,000.

Variations of this scam do exist, such as someone posing as an old neighbour or a friend of the family. Predominantly, however, the emergency scam is directed towards grandparents.
