Previous deportee charged again in Calgary

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has laid three charges against Tyson Nathaniel King (aka Chevon Kimar Trotman) for misrepresentation; use of a document to contravene the Act; and returning to Canada without authorization, pursuant to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA).

The CBSA launched an investigation in August 2014 after it received information from the Calgary Police Service that King, a previously deported person, might be in the Calgary area. The CBSA, together with the Calgary Police Service, apprehended King on October 29, and subsequent criminal charges were laid by the CBSA on November 7.

King allegedly obtained new identity documents in order to re-enter Canada.

King has been remanded into custody and is expected to appear again in Calgary Provincial Court on November 21, 2014.

King was previously removed to Barbados by the CBSA in March 2014 on a deportation order.

The CBSA is responsible for investigating cases of alleged contravention of the IRPA, and apprehending foreign nationals who are in violation of Canada’s laws. The CBSA lays charges when there is sufficient evidence to support convictions for deliberate or willful violations of the IRPA.

Red Deerians too smart for online scammers

Red Deer RCMP have received three reports since November 14 of online scammers trying – and failing – to take advantage of Red Deerians. In two cases, people who posted online ads promoting child care services were approached by a scammer who sent a cheque to “reserve a spot” for their child. In the third case, the scammer sent a cheque to someone who was selling an auto part online. In all three cases, the cheque was for more money than the service or product being offered. In cheque frauds such as these, scammers ask their intended victim to cash the cheque and then to send them back the excess money. By the time a victim realizes the cheque is no good, their own money has long since disappeared.

“We’re encouraged that all three intended victims did not fall prey to this scam,” says Corporal Leanne Molzahn of the Red Deer RCMP. “RCMP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre put a lot of energy into educating people about the various scams out there, and we’re glad that all three Red Deerians asked the right questions and checked with their banks to find out whether the cheques were legitimate or not. Of course, they weren’t.”

Over the past year, Red Deer RCMP have warned the community about these variations of online fraud:

February, 2014:

Every year, Red Deer RCMP remind singles to beware “romance” scammers, where the victim and scammer begin an online relationship through social media or a dating website. The scammer lures the victim with promises and claims of love, then eventually tells tales of hardship and asks the victim for money – usually until they have drained their victim financially.

March, 2014:

Red Deer RCMP received reports of three separate real estate scams on Kijiji showing photos of houses in Red Deer that were supposedly for rent. In all cases, scammers were copying information from online listings of homes for sale and presenting them as rental opportunities.

July 2014:
A Red Deerian who posted her résumé online was approached by two different companies that attempted to involve her in money exchange transactions. Criminals post or email fake job offers under titles such as "money transfer agent" or "payment processing agent.” Their intent is to recruit money laundering mules, which is a criminal offence.

Since March, 2013:

Red Deer RCMP have received approximately seven complaints of Extortion by Libel, where men were approached online by women who lured them into compromising online encounters and then threatened to post the encounters online unless they were paid.

“The online world offers many wonderful opportunities for the exchange of ideas and legitimate services, but it’s also home to numerous brazen predators,” Molzahn says. “When using any online service, it’s vital to educate yourself on potential pitfalls, and to ask a lot of questions.”

Red Deer RCMP urge you to arm yourselves and the vulnerable people in your life against scammers by learning how to recognize and protect yourself from fraud: www.antifraudcentre.ca.
