Be prepared for winter driving

RCMP Edmonton

Seasonal weather changes inevitably lead to seasonal traffic changes. This is true in both rural and urban areas. The Alberta RCMP wants to remind motorists to use their winter driving skills and drive to the conditions - slow down, increase following distances and pay attention. Expect to slide, not stop. Vehicle collisions increase by at least 30% during the first few months of winter.

“Everyone is someone’s family member – spouse, son, mother or sibling, says Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan, Commanding Officer for the Alberta RCMP. “By taking responsibility for their own safe driving behaviour, all Albertans can help to make sure everyone gets home safely.”

“No one leaves the house intending to get into a car crash,” says Supt. Howard Eaton, Officer-in-Charge of “K” Division Traffic Services, “Slower speed and distance are key when winter driving.”

Before leaving the house there are several things that drivers can do to improve their chances of arriving safely. Installing winter tires on a vehicle will help with driving control and traction. Planning to leave earlier for road trips and eliminating the need to rush is another way to prevent problems.
