Fatal Wabuman Lake area MVC

Spruce Grove RCMP

A collision 17 kilometers west of Edmonton on the evening of November 12 claimed the life of a 25 year old Yellowhead County woman. The collision occurred West of Stony Plain at Range Road 44 and Highway 16 in the Wabamun Lake area. An SUV was struck by a 5 tonne cube truck. The woman driving the SUV succumbed on scene to her injuries. She was the lone occupant of the vehicle. Her name will not be released, at her family's request. The man driving the cube truck was uninjured.

Road and weather conditions do not appear to be a factor, nor do alcohol and drugs. Preliminary results indicate the driver proceeded unsafely through a stop sign, not seeing the semi-truck.

Tougher tobacco laws intended to protect youth

Government of Alberta

The Alberta government is taking action to protect youth from tobacco by banning flavoured tobacco products and prohibiting smoking in vehicles when children are present.

“These changes include the strictest ban on flavoured tobacco in Canada. More than half of young tobacco users are using flavoured tobacco. By restricting access to these products, we can reduce use among youth and help our children stay healthy. Reducing the exposure of children to tobacco and reducing the overall use of tobacco products will have positive outcomes across all areas of health care.” - Stephen Mandel, Minister of Health

The amendments to the Tobacco Reduction Act and Tobacco Reduction Regulation will be phased-in over time. Starting immediately, the legislation will:
  • Ban smoking in vehicles with minors present
  • Prohibit the selling, giving, lending or supplying of tobacco products to minors, similar to federal legislation
Starting June 1, 2015, the legislation will:
  • Require minimum pack sizes for specific tobacco products – this will eliminate smaller, more affordable options
  • Ban certain flavoured tobacco products
Each year, tobacco use is linked to about 3,000 deaths in Alberta. It is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Canada.
