Calgary man charged in “white van scam”

Lethbridge Regional Police have charged a 29-year-old Calgary man in connection with a fraudulent scheme known as the “white van scam.”

On Nov. 24, 2014 police responded to multiple reports of a male approaching people in local parking lots attempting to sell HD projectors out of the back of a white SUV. The male told would-buyers the equipment was high-end merchandise worth thousands of dollars, when in fact it was not. Following investigation the subject was located and arrested without incident.

The “white van scam” as it’s commonly known, typically involves a clean-cut, polite individual – often operating a white van or similar vehicle – approach people in parking lots, at red lights, gas stations and other locations, offering to sell them high-end electronics at bargain prices. The claim often made is the subject is an audio/visual systems installer, or similar professional, who was given “extra” product from the warehouse and, for varying reasons, needs to dispose of the equipment quickly. Potential customers will then be shown a convincing website or brochure listing the equipment’s retail price at thousands of dollars.

“The so-called “white van scam” has been around in one form or another for decades,” said Kristen Harding, Executive Officer. “Whether it’s speakers, receivers, TVs or in this case, projectors, the goods being peddled aren’t stolen, but are held out to be top of the line when in fact they are cheaply made and extremely poor quality.”

The sale itself is not criminal, but when the methods employed by the ‘salesperson’ include threats, intimidation or overtly false statements or claims about the product, then criminal charges may be warranted.

“The best advice we can give to people is if something sounds too good to be true – it is,” added Harding.

David Matthew Swetlikoe, 29, of Calgary, is charged with fraud under $5,000, possession of the proceeds of crime and three counts of attempted fraud under. Swetlikoe was released on a recognizance and is scheduled to return to court December 9.

Special needs ski equipment stolen in Edmonton

Edmonton Police Service

EPS Northeast Division officers are investigating the theft of a cargo trailer filled with special needs ski equipment, and are asking for the public’s help in locating the stolen property.

Sometime during the evening hours of Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, an unknown suspect approached a cargo trailer parked on the rear driveway of a house at 119 Avenue and 44 Street. The suspect allegedly cut several locks that were securing the trailer, hitched it up to what is believed to be a truck, and drove off in an unknown direction. The owner noticed the trailer missing on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, and reported the theft to police.

The trailer is described as a 2011 Mirage Cargo Craft Trailer, with single axle, 10’ long, and white in colour. The trailer’s value is estimated at $3,000. A photo of the trailer is currently unavailable.

The trailer contained cross-country ski equipment for disabled athletes worth approximately $12,000, and V-boards for making trails in the snow valued at approximately $25,000.

“Whoever stole this trailer may have been unaware what the contents were, or the value this equipment has to special needs athletes,” says Acting Staff Sgt. Pat Bruni with EPS Northeast Division. “We’re asking the public to be on the lookout for the ski equipment, which is quite distinctive, and could be dumped in a back alley or property somewhere. It’s also possible that the equipment could be up for sale online.”

Michael Neary, Sport Manager for Cross Country Alberta, adds “This ski equipment is used by para-nordic participants or individuals with spinal injuries and other conditions that require the use of a wheelchair. It’s very specialized and unique to the participants that use it. This equipment is also used by school children so that all students can enjoy the thrill of skiing. It’s very sad and unfortunate that our para-nordic participants will be deprived of their equipment. I would be very grateful to get this equipment back so that the kids we work with can participate this winter.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident or the suspects is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm
