Best of the West Weekend issues appeal for volunteers

Best of the West Weekend committee

Since the first man climbed aboard a horse and decided to herd cattle across open range, cowboys have enjoyed sharing their adventures in stories, songs and poems. They have gathered around campfires and in saloons and community halls to impress friends and strangers with tales of their prowess and courage. There have been many, many movies made depicting the cowboy based on these tales. Some are true and some are exaggerated, but all are worth hearing.

One of the best examples of real life cowboys sharing stories of their lives has been Pincher Creek Cowboy Poetry Gathering (now known as Best of the West Weekend) For 26 years this town has hosted real life cowboys who share their music, stories and poetry with the public. It is their way of passing on their biographies to the next generations.

Unfortunately this is about to come to an end due to lack of volunteer help to put on this event. If we do not support our Western musicians and storytellers are we allowing our cowboy heritage to fade away into oblivion? Do we want to lose one of the icons of Alberta history?

If you would like to see this historic event continue into the future, come join our team and help us continue the tradition. All we need is your enthusiasm for our Western culture and traditions, and about two or three hours a month of your time until Father's Day weekend in June for the event itself.

We meet once a month at the Horseshoe Pavilion in the Agricultural Grounds at the far west end of  Main Street, Pincher Creek. Our next meeting is at 7:15 pm on November 10th, and we'll be delighted to see you there.

Please lend your support to save this event.

For more information about how YOU can help, send an email to bestofthewestweekend@yahoo.ca , phone 403 628-3385, or simply come along to our  meeting on November 10th at Pincher Creek's Horseshoe Pavilion.
